May 6, 2016 (San Diego) -- Sharp Rehabilitation and the Sharp HealthCare Foundation’s 2016 “Victories of Spirit” event celebrates the power of rehabilitation and the strength of the human spirit. The 26th annual celebration will begin at 6 p.m., Friday, May 13, at the San Diego Bayfront Hilton. The event, which is sponsored by United Healthcare, will honor the power of rehabilitation and pay tribute to extraordinary individuals and community organizations for their inspirational achievements and contributions to others, including Lemon Grove resident Alex Eugenio form East County.

“The Victories of Spirit event celebrates the power of rehabilitation and strength of the human spirit, honoring former rehabilitation patients who have overcome personal tragedy with courage and strength,” said David Brown, System Director of Rehabilitation Services for Sharp HealthCare. “We appreciate and honor their achievements and commitment of giving back to the community.”

Three individuals will be honored with the Eagle Spirit Award, an award that symbolizes the Navajo sign of the most potent healing power. This year's individual award recipients are Danielle Burt, Joe Cavallo and Alex Eugenio. These compelling stories will be shared at the event.

Danielle Burt

Danielle was just 19 years old when a tragic motorcycle accident changed everything. Thanks to the support of loving friends, Danielle not only survived, but she also found new purpose and meaning in her life. She currently serves as a role model for individuals through the Challenged Athletes Foundation and the Wounded Warriors Program.

Joe Cavallo

Joe was born with a congenital pulmonary disorder, creating difficult health challenges throughout his life. With help from the Sharp Pulmonary Rehabilitation program, Joe learned to improve his stamina and build his strength. In 2011, he finally received a lung transplant. His positive spirit carries him through life and inspires others along the way.

Alex Eugenio

At 43, Alex suffered a second stroke, resulting in right-side weakness and cognitive deficits. Determined to recover, he worked hard to regain his strength and walk independently. Alex stays motivated through his love of music, and encourages others to pursue their passions.
