February 7, 2014 (San Diego’s East County) -- While on their month long inter-session break from Saint Augustine High School, two juniors put on a golf tournament to benefit Wounded Warriors. Tournament Director Louis Molina of Chula Vista had the initial idea to organize a golf tournament after speaking to wounded warriors on the golf course when he was younger. He invited his Saint Augustine High School golf teammate, Collin McNicholl-Carter of La Mesa, to be Assistant Director and Marketing Assistant.

Collin was enthusiastic about the project and eager to get involved because his own grandfather is a veteran and an avid golfer.

To start, Louis  successfully solicited all donations for the event. The boys used texting and phone calls to stir up interest in their event, sent emails and handed out flyers. Collin then organized a telethon meeting at his home; both asked friends, family members and sponsors to register for the event. At the meeting focused on sorting donation items to evenly distribute values for the raffle and typed marketing display signs for each.

The event started at 9 a.m. at the par 3 Colina Park Golf Course, it was a shot gun start. Thirteen Saints men show up to support the event along with about 40 other players.

"Since it is a beginner course, we had quite a few participants that had never tried golf before." said Collin. He organized the putting contest, and with his own funds paid for sponsor signs and army dog tag prize necklaces.

Louis said “I really enjoyed the part where the entire plan came together….and seeing the satisfaction and people would come up to me and say, ‘I had so much fun today. This was a great tournament.”

Participants played the course, participated in a “closest to the pin” challenge, putting contest, and a raffle. To the boy’s surprise, their event raised just over $4,000.00 to donate to the Wounded Warrior Project benefiting our servicemen. Louis and Collin were very happy to use their intersession to give back to their community with this successful event.
