December 19, 2014 (San Diego) – Five people are dead and 28 have been sickened with listeria after eating pre-packaged caramel apples. The illnesses have occurred in ten states including California, according to the U.S.Centers for Disease Control.
The outbreak has also been linked to several cases of meningitis in children, a potentially fatal inflammation of the spinal cord, USA reports.
Health officials are working to identify specific brands. Consumers are advised not to eat any pre-packaged caramel apples and to discard any that you may have in your home.
Symptoms of listeriosis infection include muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, fever, and convulsions. Symptoms can begin as early as 3 days after eating contaminated products or as long as 70 days—more than two months.
