HEARTLAND YOUTHBUILD’S “COOL CAR CLASSIC” MAY 13: $250 FOR BEST IN SHOW

April 26, 2017 (San Diego) – Nearly 70 classic vehicles and muscle cars will be toughing it out to earn a $250 “Best in Show” prize at new East County Chamber member Heartland YouthBuild’s Cool Car Classic. 

The event takes place on Saturday, May 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the YouthBuild campus, 5280 Orange Avenue in City Heights.

April 26, 2017 (San Diego) -- Biologists at UC San Diego have demonstrated for the first time that a widely-used pesticide can significantly impair the ability of honey bees to fly.

The finding raising concerns about how pesticides affect their capacity to pollinate and the long-term effects on the health of honey bee colonies.

April 26, 2017 (San Diego) – A federal judge in San Francisco has blocked President Donald Trump’s executive order that required withholding of federal funds from sanctuary cities and states that shelter immigrants and decline to cooperate with federal authorities on deportation efforts.

CALIF. SEA LEVELS RISING AT A RAPID RATE: 67% OF BEACHES COULD BE LOST BY END OF THIS CENTURY

April 26, 2017 (San Diego) -- Sea levels rising much faster than expected could submerge over two-thirds of the state’s beaches by the end of this century, also forcing damage and relocation of major infrastructure. Those are among the disturbing findings of an updated  state-commissioned report, “Rising Seas in California.”  Sea levels could rise 30 to 40 times faster than in the last century, raising the sea level 10 feet after 2050 under the most severe scenario.

April 26, 2017 (San Diego) - UC Riverside scored five runs over the middle two innings to break a 2-2 deadlock as it went on to defeat San Diego State, 7-4, Tuesday evening at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The win provided a measure of revenge for the Highlanders, who had suffered a 10-1 setback at the hands of the Aztecs a week ago in Riverside.

STATE AUDIT FINDS UNIV. OF CALIF. HID “SECRET RESERVES” WHILE RAISING TUITIONS

April 25, 2017 (Sacramento) – A report by California’s state auditor claims that the University of California hid $175 million in secret reserves while it raised administrative spending by 28 percent.  The hidden reserves were not disclosed to the board or regents over the past several years, meaning regents were voting to hike tuitions without knowing about significant funds that might have alleviated the need to force students to pay more.

April 25, 2017 (La Mesa) - Santana High School baseball paid a visit to Helix to take on the Highlanders.  It promised to be a fun matchup, with the Scottie dogs sporting an incredible 13-7 overall record (3-1 in league) coming into today.  The Sultans were even more impressive, coming into the contest undefeated in league play (4-0) and 14-6 overall.  Junior Keaton Chase took the mound for the Highlanders against senior Tristan Salinas for the Sultans.

April 25, 2017 (San Diego) - San Diego State senior Micha Auzenne was named the Mountain West Women's Track Athlete of the Week for meets held April 21-22. The honor comes on the heels of her win in the 100-meter hurdles at the Triton Invitational, during which she ran a collegiate best and the fifth-best time in SDSU history.

SDSU’s leading goal scorer was one of five Aztecs to earn all-GCC accolades and was joined by Alyssa Diacono, Kate McDonnell, Ioli Benekou and Shelby Kraft.

The signs were so original that they did not even have a common slogan.  I attended a march of 15,000 individuals.

April 24, 2017 (San Diego) -- The number of homicides, aggravated assaults, and motor vehicle thefts in the San Diego region went up in 2016, compared to 2015, while the number of rapes, robberies, burglaries, and larcenies went down, according to the annual crime report released by the SANDAG Criminal Justice Division.

TWO RESCUED OFF COWLES MOUNTAIN

April 24, 2017 (San Diego) – Two hikers were rescued over the weekend off Cowles Mountain.

A 69-year-old woman suffered heat exhaustion and was airlifted off the trail on Saturday afternoon.  Then on Sunday, a second airlift was done to rescue a 25-year-old hiker who suffered an injury.  She was taken by ambulance to a hospital for non-emergency treatment, according to San Diego-Rescue Service.

RAMONA PLANNERS PUSH STATE FOR SAFETY SOLUTIONS ON STATE ROUTE 67

April 24, 2017 (Ramona) – State Route 67 between Ramona and Lakeside is one of the most accident-prone stretches of highway in San Diego County. 

Caltrans is planning to install flexible posts between Willow Road in Lakeside and Shady Oaks in Ramona at a cost of $7.14 million in hopes of preventing head-on collisions.

NORTH KOREA THREATENS TO SINK SAN DIEGO-BASED AIRCRAFT CARRIER

SANTEE MOVES FORWARD ON CLIMATE ACTION PLAN

Chart courtesy of NASA: Temperature data from four international science institutions all show rapid warming in past few decades-- and the last decade has been the warmest on record.

April 24, 2017 (Santee) – Santee’s City Council took a step toward establishing a “Sustainable Santee” climate action plan, but only under pressure from the state to do so. 

By a 4-1 vote on April 12, with Mayor John Minto opposed, the Council voted to hire LSA Associates to complete the city’s climate action plan and an environmental impact report, as required by California law. Council authorized paying up to $133,000 to the consulting company.

EL CAJON TAX PREPARER SENTENCED FOR FRAUD

April 24, 2017 (Washington D.C.) – If Congress does not approve a budget by close of business on this Friday, April 29th, the federal government will shut down.  That would cause disruptions in federal services, payments to federal workers, and the economy.   The deadline to pass a budget or shut down the government Friday is also Trump’s 100th day in office, a milestone when presidents traditionally seek to hail their accomplishments, not preside over a fiasco.
