ARRESTS MADE IN ATTEMPTED MURDER OF MOTEL CLERK IN EL CAJON

December 19, 2014 (El Cajon) -- El Cajon Police announced today that they have arrested two men in connection with the attempted murder of a clerk who was shot during an armed robbery on December 16th at Quality Inn and Suites, 1250 El Cajon Boulevard.



Police were called to the scene at 1:29 p.m. after a masked suspect armed with a shotgun tried to rob the office at the inn and shot the clerk. The clerk was transported to a hospital and has since been released.

The shooter was described as white, wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt, brown shorts, and black shoes. Based on information obtained from surveillance video and witnesses, suspect information was developed which included a description of a red Chevy pickup used as a getaway vehicle.  This information was passed on to County Law Enforcement Officers.  On December 17, patrol officers from El Cajon Police located the vehicle at the Villa Embasadora Hotel at 1556 East Main Street, El Cajon.

Officers contacted a subject matching the suspect description, as well as his companions. He was arrested for narcotics offenses and interviewed by a robbery detective with El Cajon Police. Detectives identified Charles Douglas Winzer, 24, of San Diego as the armed robbery suspect at Quality Inn.  He was arrested and booked into county jail on December 17 on charges of attempted murder, robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and other charges.

Additionally detectives were able to identify the getaway driver as Christopher James Winzer, 22, the brother of Charles Winzer. Christopher Winzer was arrested and booked into County Jail on December 18th on charges of robbery and accessory to a felony. The weapon used in the robbery has also been recovered, said Lieutenant Frank LaHaye with El Cajon Police.
