April 21, 2017 (Boise) - The San Diego State softball team had its season-long five-game winning streak snapped in a 6-4 loss Friday afternoon at Boise State. The Aztecs dropped to 23-15 overall and 7-6 in Mountain West play with the loss, while the Broncos improved to 25-15 and 7-9.

SDSU jumped out with two runs in the top of the first inning as its first four batters in the lineup all recorded a hit. Zaria Meshack (Vallejo, Calif.) led off with a 11-pitch double and Katie Byrd (Santee, Calif./West Hills HS) singled to put runners on the corners. Jenavee Peres (Garden Grove, Calif.) followed with a long fly ball over right fielder Izzy Serrano to score Meshack with the first run of the game. Molly Sturdivant (Santa Ana, Calif.) then singled through the left side to load the bases with no outs. BSU starting pitcher Christina Washington, however, settled down to strike out Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Taylor Stewart (Bellflower, Calif.) swinging. Byrd later scored on a passed ball before Washington got Shelby Thompson (Benicia, Calif.) to ground out to shortstop to end the inning.

Boise State exploded for five runs in the bottom of the second on four hits and two San Diego State errors as only three of the five runs were earned to Aztec starting pitcher Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.).

The Broncos added to their lead in the fourth when a single down the left-field line by Rebekah Cervantes scored Tatiana Sorokina from second base.

The Aztecs tried to close the gap in the fifth as Peres had a one-out single and Sturdivant followed with a four-pitch walk. Frankie Orlando (Roseville, Calif.) pinch hit for Cable and Kennedy Cribbs (Los Angeles) pinch ran for Sturdivant, but Orlando grounded into a double play, which also got Cribbs out at second base.

SDSU went to work again in the sixth when Stewart led off with a double off the right-center field wall before being replaced by Aris Metcalfe (Compton, Calif.). Metcalfe was tagged out at third, though, as Thompson grounded into a fielder’s choice. Washington then got Ignacio to ground into a double play to end the threat.

San Diego State mounted one last comeback in the seventh as Kiera Wright (Riverside, Calif.) led off with an infield single, but Meshack lined to third base for BSU’s third double play of the game. Katie Byrd kept the game alive with a single to left-center field. Paige Reimann replaced Washington in the circle for Boise State and promptly hit Peres in the leg. Sturdivant then drilled a double off the right-field fence to plate Byrd and Peres and make it a 6-4. Reimann, however, got Orlando to ground out to second base to end the game in favor of the Broncos.

The top four hitters of the lineup for the Aztecs all had two hits apiece. Peres (RBI, R) and Sturdivant (2 RBI, 2B, BB) each were 2-for-3, while Meshack (R, 2B) and Byrd (2 R) each went 2-for-4.

Romero (7-4) took the loss after allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits over three innings. Alex Formby surrendered one run on five hits, while striking out two, in three innings of relief.

The second game of the series is set for 4 p.m. MT (3 p.m. PT) Saturday.
