(8) Utah State pulls ahead in singles to defeat (8) SDSU

April 27, 2017 (Las Vegas) - Despite an encouraging start, the San Diego State women’s tennis team was unable to prevail against the Utah State Aggies, dropping a 4-2 decision in the first round of the 2017 Mountain West Championships on Thursday, April 27, in Las Vegas, Nev.
The (9) Aztecs came out of the gate strong in doubles play, where the first and second-seeded duos took down the (8) Aggies. First up were juniors Jana Buth and Paola Diaz, who topped Monika Van de Vondel and Maggie O’Meara, 6-3, on court No. 1. Seniors Taylor Lederman and Olivia Larsson were not as successful in the third seed, falling 6-4 to Jenna Kane and Lucy Octave, but SDSU senior Kennedy Davis and freshman Mia Smith pulled off a win over Sabrina Demerath and Nini Guensler, 7-6, in the second seed to claim the doubles point and hold an advantage moving into singles.
SDSU and Utah State sparred in close sets across the board in singles, but ultimately the Aggies bounced back to claim four and win the match. In the four seed, Lederman went down against Van de Vondel, 6-4, 6-2, but shortly after, Buth snagged a win over Guensler, 6-2, 6-4, in the top match. Diaz struggled to close the gap against Octave, falling 6-3, 6-3, while USU’s Hannah Jones charged on to defeat Larsson, 7-6, 6-0, in the No. 6 match.
At 3-2, the Aggies held the advantage with just two matches remaining. Despite Davis taking the early lead in the third set against Ekaterina Tugarinova, Smith fell first against Demerath, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, in the fifth seed to give USU the win.
Today’s loss marks the end of the 2016-17 women’s tennis season, leaving the Aztecs 5-18, 0-4. (8) USU now advances to the quarterfinal match tomorrow where they will face tournament host (1) UNLV.
