March 17, 2015 (San Diego) - The San Diego State Aztecs men’s basketball team will face off against the St. Johns Red Storm, this Friday night in North Carolina as March Madness begins with SDSU making its 6th straight appearance at the NCAA Tournament.

The Aztecs are seeded at number 8, while St. Johns is seeded number 9 in the South bracket. The winner of this matchup will likely face a tough opponent in the 2nd round with the #1 seed, Duke Blue Devils, who this weekend are set to face the number 16 seed, which has not yet been determined.   If Duke wins this weekend, which seems likely, the Aztecs could face their toughest challenge yet, but first they need to take care of business against St. Johns.

The Red Storms lineup is made up of mostly guards, which means compared to SDSU they are relatively undersized. Yet despite the appearance of a mismatch in the Aztecs favor, SDSU has had issues on offense as of late. They’re offense struggled to make shots in a loss to Wyoming in the Mountain West Conference Championship last week and wound up sharing the conference title with the Cowboys.

St. Johns is going to be short one of their top shot-blocking defenders as he was suspended for the tournament because he tested positive for marijuana, the New York Post reports.  In the past, the Aztecs have made it to the round of 16 and lost.

While fans dream of a final four appearance, it may be a tough go this year with Duke looming over the bracket.

The Aztecs and Red Storm face off on Friday at 6:40 local time.
