March 24, 2017 (San Diego) - The San Diego State women’s tennis team looked to snap its three match-losing streak against the Princeton Tigers on Friday, but fell to the Ivy League team 5-2 in its final non-conference dual of the season at the Aztec Tennis Center.

Starting the match with doubles play, senior Jana Buth and junior Paola Diaz grabbed a solid 6-1 win in the top seed against Princeton’s 71st-ranked duo Caroline Joyce and Nicole Kalhorn. On court three, senior Olivia Larsson and freshman Alli Valk were unable to move past Clare McKee and Katrine Steffensen and the Tigers claimed the match 6-4. On court two, senior Kennedy Davis and freshman Mia Smith drew out their battle against Sivan Krems and Gaby Pollner but were unable to get ahead, falling 7-5 and allowing Princeton to claim the doubles point.

The Aztecs were unable to right the ship in singles play, where the first four matches went to Princeton, solidifying its win on the day. On court six, Valk was unable to keep it close and gave way to McKee, 6-3, 6-1. In the fifth seed, freshman Berta Acero faced the same fate in her matchup against Joyce, giving the Tigers a 6-2, 6-3 win and its third point of the day. To seal the Princeton victory, Kalhorn took control in the No. 4 match against Smith, claiming a 6-4, 6-1 match and a Princeton win.

In the top-seeded match, Buth faced a tough adversary in Steffensen, who eventually edged Buth, 6-4, 6-4. Davis and Diaz continued their fights, with Davis conquering Chen, 7-5, 4-6, 10-5, and claiming her fifth straight singles victory. Diaz was the last to finish for the Aztecs, edging Krems 7-5, 7-6 (4) to claim a second match point for SDSU.

Today’s loss marks the Aztecs’ fourth straight and puts the team at 5-13 on the season. SDSU returns to the Aztec Tennis Center next week to kick off Mountain West play. The Aztecs play host to the UNLV Rebels Friday, March 31, with first serve set for 10 a.m.
