SDSU claims doubles point, but falls in singles play to Toreros

March 1, 2017 (San Diego) - The San Diego State women's tennis team traveled across town to face the University of San Diego on Wednesday afternoon where they fell to the Toreros, 4-1, at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center.
The Aztecs got off to a good start in doubles play, where Kennedy Davis and Mia Smith downed their opponents, Nicole Anderson and Maria-Paula Torres, 6-0, in the second seed. USD’s Colomba DeFilippo and Daniela Morales responded, taking down Jana Buth and Paola Diaz, 6-4, in the top match, but the Aztecs came out with the doubles point when Alli Valk and Olivia Larsson topped Sophia Chow and Gemma Garcia, 7-6 (2).
The Toreros took over control in singles play, as Morales grabbed USD’s first point in the No. 2 matchup against Davis, 7-5, 6-1. DeFilippo also came out on top against Smith in a 6-2, 6-3 victory on court four, and Torres topped Larsson, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 5 slot. The dual came down to the top-seeded match, where Anderson was able to edge Buth, 6-3, 7-5.
Now at 4-8 on the season, the team returns to the Aztec Tennis Center this weekend for a duo of duals. The Aztecs will face off against Hawai’i on Saturday at noon, and versus Brown on Sunday, with first serve set for 1 p.m.
