BERNICE SAFFORD, 82, KILLED IN ALPINE CAR ACCIDENT; HUSBAND SERIOUSLY INJURED

September 16, 2011 (Alpine) – The San Diego Medical Examiner’s office has identified Bernice Helen Safford, 82, as the victim killed in a car accident yesterday afternoon in Alpine. According to Officer Brian Penning at the California Highway Patrol, Safford’s husband, who was a passenger in the vehicle she was driving, was also seriously injured and remains hospitalized.

 

 

The elderly woman had pulled out of a shopping center to head southbound on Tavern Road when she drove into the path of a large pickup truck traveling northbound at 1:13 p.m. She was struck on the driver side of the vehicle and crossed all lanes of traffic. The vehicle came to rest on the lawn of the Alpine Fire Department, where fire personnel immediately came to the aid of the victims and contacted police.
 

Despite lifesaving efforts, Safford died at the scene.
