February 12, 2017 (Borrego Springs) — The Borrego Days Desert Festival faces possible cancellation this year due to a shortage of sponsors, the Borrego Sun reports. The festival has taken place for the past 52 years as a tradition to welcome snowbirds who flock to the desert each winter with a parade and other activities.

But the Borrego Chamber, organizer of the event, announced in January that some donors broke their word, leaving the event with a $41,000 deficit. If no major sponsors come forward, a decision will be made in March to either postpone this year’s event, or cancel Borrego Days completely.

Some long-time area residents still fondly recall the Grapefruit Days of yore, another once-popular festival that has fallen by the wayside.

Some newer events have sprung up in recent years, however, including the Borrego Film Festival and Circle of Art.

The next Chamber meeting will be on February 14, when the community may learn if a major sponsor with a heart will step forward to save one of the community’s most long-standing traditions.
