April 21, 2016 (El Cajon) - Cajon Valley Union School District hosted the community’s second annual TEDxKids@ElCajon event on Saturday, April 16. Speakers included students in grades 1-8, as well as featured speakers Aidan Fay, a local student who built a flight simulator in his bedroom, Brynjar Karl, the “Lego Boy” from Iceland who built a 20-foot replica of the Titanic using over 56,000 Legos, and Chula Vista teen Tae Ho, a Master Chef Junior contestant. Over 1500 children and families listened to inspiring talks from our youth, engaged in a unique Innovation Park, and participated in workshops such as hip hop dance and Minecraft modeling.
What city leaders were saying about the event:
Superintendent David Miyashiro says, “TEDxKids@ElCajon is a once in a lifetime opportunity for our students to craft a unique message that will reach a worldwide audience. Cajon Valley Board President Tamara Otero says, “TEDxKids@ElCajon is a perfect setting to highlight the wonderful work of our students along with the support of our community. It brings together all of the components of what makes Cajon Valley Union School District and the El Cajon community so great!”
Mayor Bill Wells says, “This event highlights some of the great work being done in Cajon Valley. Our children are receiving a first rate education, and it’s clear that our city has a bright future.”
City Manager Doug Williford says, “When kids have a chance to spread their ideas beyond their immediate surroundings, it gives them a sense of what’s possible in this world. This event is bringing attention to the wonderful work being done in our schools.”
