October 13, 2016 (El Cajon )-- Mega Network has created a video montage with highlights from the recent El Cajon candidate forum at Grossmont College.  Seven candidates fielded questions from moderators and the audience on a wide range of issues, from the recent police shooting to reopeningthe East County Performing Arts Center to ideas for strengthening the community

Candidates participating were Stephanie Harper, Ben Kalasho,  Humbert Cabrera,  Steve Goble, George Glover,Joseph Fountain and Vickie Knight Butcher, all challengers. (Photos below) Incumbents Bob McClellan and Star Bales did not attend, nor did challenge Paul Circo.

The debate was moderated by Miriam Raftery,  editor of East County Magazine, Karen Pearlman, reporter for the San Diego-Union Tribune, Albert  Fulcher,  editor of the East County Californian, and Marya Fani, broadcast journalist at Mega Network.

Note:  The poor audio quality is due to an error by a Grossmont College technician who did not properly set up the audio hookup.  As a result, only audio through a camera was recorded,  and much of the tape was barely audible.  We are working to create a transcript of the full debate soon.

Interesting to watch after the 2016 election

I just wanted to say that I haven't been incredibly involved in politics, however the election (despite results or what candidate I voted for) has opened my eyes a bit to look more at what all is involved in the process, especially on a local level. This was interesting to watch and (despite some audio issues :) ) Let's me take a deeper view into our local politics here in El Cajon. Thanks so much for documenting!

Video clip doesn't accurately reflect the context of comments

Because the video clip of my comments starting at 00:51 did not contain the complete thought I expressed, I want viewers to know the full comments I expressed were: 50 minutes was too long for an officer to respond.....because there are aren't enough police officers in the budget. That last part didn't make it into the video clip. Without that information, viewers might come to a different conclusion. This year's budget allows for 20 fewer officers than 2003's budget. According to SANDAG's 2016 Mid-Year Crime Report, violent crime is up 28% in El Cajon. Property crime is up 14%. 20 fewer officers than 2003. We need more officers in El Cajon.

Thank you, Steve.

It's very disappointing to us that Grossmont insisted we use their audio person,  who failed to property hook up audio so we got only tinny sound from a camera, nothing through the mikes recorded.

MegaTV could only get partial video (one camera got jarred/unplugged) and the audio was barely discernable.

We DID finally get audio for the first hour and a half of the debate (no explanation why the last few questions were missing). I've assigned a reporter to come up with highlights of all the audio that'sdiscernable. We originally asked for full audio, andwhen that was poor quality, we hoped to get a full transcript done at our expense.Even that is not possible but we WILL publish detailed highlights in next couple of days and encourage every candidate to augment that with full statements or additional information.

My deepest apologiest for the situation though it was beyond our control.

Next time we'll usea different video that allows us to use our own audio person, as we did with the HelixWater and Lemon Grove mayoral forums, where we were able to provide complete audio tapes of the full forums.
