Dear Mayor Faulconer:

March 25, 2017 (Lakeside) -- I am a native San Diego senior, who began my sport exposures at "Lane Field."  I know you were never there and probably can't even relate to that ball field.

I have seen San Diego go through my share of stadiums, political extortion, political waste, tax payer purchase of tickets to subsidize sports etc.

I also have seen you supporting a soccer field to replace Qualcomm now that the Chargers have bolted.

Tell you what; why don't you talk with your Mexican counterpart seen on the City website shaking your hand, while millions of gallons of Mexican sewage spills into oceans and onto American beaches.

Ask him what he is going to do about it in this mode of cooperation you two reflected!

Mr. Mayor:  This is as old as I am and no one has stepped up to the responsibility of Mexican pollutants polluting American oceans and soil.

That aside, as to my lifetime in San Diego, perhaps you best suggest to him at the same time to put the soccer field on the Mexican side of our border.

After all, soccer was not part of my sport and didn't even exist as a youth.  I am dog tired of Mexican flags and choking on their dust kicked in my face by his fleeing countrymen/women into my country, America.

Add to the Trump legacy and make them pay for the sewer spill cleanup and resolution, border fence and soccer field in his famous Tijuana.

Arriba!

Longer rant

Adding onto what I said earlier...

As a sportswriter and soccer fan (and non-racist), this person completely misses the point of what soccer does.  Every 4 years we have the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup.  Every 2 years we have the Euro, which can even be relevant to us as Americans because a lot of us have European ancestry (Italy, please stop sucking at soccer, grazie).

Soccer, unlike football or even sports that are internationally recognized (basketball, baseball and hockey), has something that other sports don't:  nationally recognized national teams.  Because of that, it brings the world together to cheer on their country.  It brings out pride.  I'm sure you've  seen those fans decked out in their country's gear at the World Cup and the Euro, the pride on the players' faces as they sing their anthem?

Soccer gets such a bad rep in the sports community, even worse than baseball.  With baseball it's "haha you like watching people hit balls for a living."  With soccer it's "haha you like watching 11 Mexicans (in this guy's case) running around a field kicking a ball."  It gets an even worse rep in the hockey community.  It's wicked tiring.  I wish people could see soccer for what it is: a unifying sport that brings people together.

"soccer was not part of my sport and didn't even exist as a youth."  List of people who care:  0.  Because surprise!  Not everyone is you!  And what does that even mean, didn't exist??? You know that soccer has been an Olympic sport since the London games of 1908 and the Euro has been played since 1960, right?

I suggest you watch this video from the video game FIFA World Cup 2002.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79vVVEQBq7U It has supporters from all over the world (even Asia and Africa) talking about their love of the game.

Then when you're done with that, watch a game recap of last night's game between the US and Honduras.  We blew them out of the water 6-0.  We have a bomb team right here in America and you don't even realize it.

Then when you're done with that, watch the Premier League on NBCSN.

RACISM

Given the RACIST remarks submitted above, I must reply. I suggest that the individual who feels angry at those who drive north to enjoy their national sport, watch the Olympics and see how people of many races and ethnicities are able to compete without incident of racist or ethnic animus. He should take a lesson from them and applaud those who drive north to engage in spectator sports, as well as bring revenues to our city and county's coffers. Without their contributions, he might be paying higher taxes. By the way, many of these people's ancestors owned the very ground on which he lives. Unfortunately, those ancestors had no choice in the Spanish/Mexican sale of their land to his ancestors when the state was called Alta (Upper) California.
So, please remember that you are living on stolen land, before you condemn those who visit us from Mexico.

This rubs me the wrong way.

Not only as a sportswriter who thinks the soccer stadium will be great for the city, but as a human being who's not a racist.
