February 28, 2018 (San Diego) -- Another winter storm is set to swoop in Thursday night through Saturday from the Pacific Northwest, bringing potentially heavy rain and more mountain snow.  Winds could pick up too through mountain passes and desert slopes, too.

The first heavy winter snowstorm hit San Diego County Monday and Tuesday this week, bringing snow down to 2,000 feet.  By mid-day Tuesday, more than six inches had fallen in Julian, with even heavier snowfall atop Mount Laguna and Palomar Mountain.

Snow also blanketed areas along I-8 in East County including Descanso, Pine Valley and Japatul Valley.  In eastern Alpine, Lions, Tigers and Bears rescue facility posted photos of exotic wildlife including tigers and lions discovering and frolicking in the snow.

Elsewhere in the County, between a half inch and an inch of rain fell on many communities, as well as a hailstorm that pelted La Mesa, Mount Helix and some other areas. Cold temperatures dipped below freezing in the mountains and into the 50s in El Cajon and La Mesa.

Snowfall forced closure of schools in Mountain Empire, Julian and Warner Springs.

If you plan to visit the snow this weekend to enjoy sledding or building a snowman, be sure to carry chains, have a full tank of gas and carry plenty of water and food in case of a vehicle breakdown.  Be prepared for delays, as “snow jams” are a common phenomenon when storms lift and a winter wonderland in our mountains draws visitors from across the region.
