June 3, 2012 (La Mesa) -- The La Mesa Flag Day Parade reminds us that Centennials are a time to reflect.

As we watched the men and women who came before us to be honored, we were struck with a profound sense of gratefulness for the jewel in which we live. We are blessed to live in a country for which others are willing to endure severe hardship to reach, in a hometown where neighbors come together to celebrate the good, and support one another with care and casseroles when events so warrant.

We admit to wiping a sentimental, proud tear from our eyes yesterday as we watched our young people, from pre-school to young adults, share their talents and serve our country and community. Their exuberance, likewise, is a gift we don’t take for granted. When we look at them we see the heart of our community, and have confidence that whatever the future they lead us toward, it will be a good one.

A photo taken after the parade by the City, to re-create a historical 1923 photo hanging in City Hall, is now available to be viewed here; the password is "100."
