September 15, 2014 (San Diego)--San Diego City Councilwoman Marti Emerald has been diagnosed with breast cancer and will be undergoing outpatient surgery, she revealed on her Facebook page.

“My doctors say I have an excellent prognosis for full recovery, after the usual protocols,” wrote Emerald, who currently represents the 9th Council District including the San Diego State University College area, City Heights and Southcrest.  She has previously represented a district that included San Carlos, Del Cerro and other inland communities.

Emerald is widely known countywide, as a former broadcast journalist for more than 30 years. She spent more than two decades at ABC 10 News, where she was known as the “Troubleshooter” for her consumer advocacy reports.

Emerald currently chair’s the city’s Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods committee.

She said she learned of the cancer diagnosis this week and intends to use her experience to advocate for patients with the disease, and to post resources for other breast cancer patients on her Facebook page.

She added, “I look forward to a full recovery and getting back to work and back to the business of serving our city.”
