April 24, 2016 (Rancho San Diego) -- Six local bands with styles ranging from flamenco jazz to country rock will be featured at the 2016 Coyote Music Festival on the afternoon of Saturday, May 7, at Cuyamaca College.

The annual festival, now in its eighth year, is organized, produced and promoted by students in Cuyamaca College’s Music Industry Studies program and culminates a semester’s worth of work. Cuyamaca College offers the county’s only degree in music industry studies, and it is among the few schools in the region offering a transfer degree program that combines training in music theory, literature and performance with studies in music technology and business.

Admission is free.

“The Coyote Music Festival is a great opportunity for the community to enjoy live music in a wonderful setting while also offering our students real-world experience in producing a music festival,” said Annie Zuckerman, a Business Office Technology instructor who teaches the marketing and promotions aspect of the event.

Indeed, many graduates go on to find jobs in studio and live production work.

The bands and their styles scheduled to perform at the 2016 Coyote Music Festival:

  • Alejandro Junco starts off the Festival at noon with his classical infused, flamenco jazz sound that falls under the World Fusion genre.
  • Enter the Blue Sky, a well-known local band admired for its Americana roots music, performs from 12:40 to 1:15 p.m.
  • Alex Famous performs from 1:20 to 1:55 p.m. Their music? Think piano. Think ballads. Think melodramatic attachment to the mundane.
  • The Naked I, which describes its alternative rhythms as ‘naked and raw’, is set to perform from 2 to 2:35 p.m.
  • The Marissa Grace Music Band, which combines strong vocals with a talented band, is set to perform from 2:40 to 3:15 p.m.
  • The Cory Wilkins Band wraps up the festival when it brings its original brand of outlaw-riff-country to the stage from 3:20 to 3:55 p.m.

Bands were required to audition on Feb. 19. Cory Wilkins said auditioning for the festival was a no-brainer.

“There’s not much more you could do as a musician than playing your music for other people,” Wilkins said. “It’s also something that is helping the students here learn the ins and outs of putting on a music festival. We’re really looking forward to it. It’s going to be a blast.”

Maria McRoberts, who manages the Marissa Grace Music Band, agreed. “They’re really excited to be part of this festival and they’re looking forward to sharing their original music with the community.”

The 2016 Coyote Music Festival takes place on the Grand Lawn. Aunty Lynne’s food truck will be selling Pacific Rim-inspired cuisine, and other vendors will be on hand selling various wares. Parking is free.

Cuyamaca College is at 900 Rancho San Diego Parkway in Rancho San Diego. For further information, contact Taylor Smith at (619) 660-4627, or visit www.coyotemusicfest.com, or www.facebook.com/CoyoteMusicFestival/.
