August 16, 2015 (Chula Vista) -- A La Mesa mother and daughter were killed Thursday in a head on collision on SR-125 just north of the San Miguel Ranch.

Diane Defenbaugh, 60, and her daughter, Kathryn “Katy” Defenbaugh, 29, both veterinarians, were heading to SeaWorld to celebrate Katy’s 29th birthday, but never made it there.

According to the California Highway Patrol a 27-year-old Spring Valley man in a GMC Yukon for unknown reasons veered right into the guardrail, then rebounded across the center divider into opposing traffic, hitting the Defenbaugh’s Suburban head on.

The women’s vehicle came to rest in the middle of the freeway. Firefighters pulled the women from their mangled SUV, however both sustained critical injuries and died at the scene.

The driver of the Yukon sustained minor injuries and was transported to Scripps Mercy Hospital.
