SYCUAN POW-WOW SEPTEMBER 5-7

The Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation will host its 25th annual pow-wow on September 5-7 at the Sycuan reservation in El Cajon, located behind the Sycuan casino.

A pow-wow is a celebration and a time for people to join together, sing, dance, renew old friendships and make new ones.   Traditionally, pow-wows also welcomed the beginning of life in springtime and provided a place for young people to meet and court.

Today, dancers and singers from tribes across the nation come to compete for prize money as well as keep up relationships.  Only registered contestants may  participate in the dancing contests—but everyone can take part when an intertribal dance is announced – visitors included.  Dancers are in the center of a circle, with the audience forming a larger circle around them to bring together the community and culture.  There are no spectators at a pow-wow, Sycuan’s website states. Everyone is a participant.

JULIAN GRAPE STOMP FESTA SEPT. 6

On of our backcountry’s popular annual activities is to roll up your pants , bare your feet and join in an annual harvest tradition. On September 6th, the Julian Grape Stomp Festa will be held at Menghini Winery.  Guests are invited to help stomp tons of grapes and winetasting will also be available, along with food and merchandise vendors. There is a fee for this event, as well as an optional VIP ticket that includes appetizers and comfortable seating at a full bar plus one free drink.  (http://www.julianmerchants.org/#!grape-stomp-festa/c1ir5 )
