April 1, 2016 (San Diego’s East County)--This week’s Destination East County includes Mozart, an Old West Art Fest, the Garden Native Tour, Padre’s Opening Day and more.

Plus we’ll have previews of coming attractions including the Spring Garden Festival at Cuyamaca College, Chaldean Nights at Sycuan in El Cajon and an El Monte Flume Trail Hike.

 THIS WEEK'S MAJOR EVENTS

MUSIC OF MOZART: APRIL 1 IN SPRING VALLEY

Grossmont Symphony Orchestra and Master Chorale will present a special choral/orchestral project in honor of the 260th anniversary of the birth of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.  The concert opens with his operatic overture to Don Giovanni and ends with a performance of his Requiem.  The concert will be held Friday, April1st at 7:30 p.m. in the Santa Sophia Church (9800 San Juan Street) in Spring Valley.

OLD WEST ART FEST APRIL 2-3

The community of Shelter Valley near Julian invites you to an Old West Art Fest on Saturday, April 2nd and 3rd. This all day event will take place at the Shelter Valle Community Center (7217 Great Southern Overland State Route of 1849, Julian.)

The show features a plein air art contest in this high desert community, including desert landscapes and local Native American and stagecoach trails history. This art contest will benefit the Shelter Valley Community Center. At this time of year the area abounds in flowers. This area is also known for its Native American village sites, pictographs and morteros. There will also be an arts and crafts sale as well as an antiques and collectable sale on the Shelter Valley Community Center grounds on Sunday afternoon from noon -5pm.

GARDEN NATIVE TOUR APRIL 2-3

The Garden Native Tour on April 2-3 from 9:30 to 4:40 p.m. will feature self-guided tours of 20 native plant gardens in eastern San Diego, the El Cajon Valley, and surrounding foothills.  You can get inspired, learn how to save water and create beauty at a Sustainable Gardening Showcase.  The tour includes gardens in Roland and the College area, La Mesa, El Cajon, Mission Gorge, Santee, Jamul and foothills locations.  You can see edible gardens, wildlife habitat, and learn about sustainable living options such as rain water storage, graywater systems, turf replacement, and animal husbandry as well.

PADRES SEASON HOME OPENER APRIL 4th

The San Diego Padres season home opener is Monday April 4th at Petco Park.  The Padres host the Los Angeles Dodgers to kick off the 2016 season.    The first pitch is at 4:05 p.m. 

The East Village Association is hosting a Day Block Party from 10 am to 6 pm on J Street between 6th and 10th Avenues. This is a free, family-friendly community event where locals and visitors celebrate opening day at Petco Park and explore East Village, San Diego’s largest urban neighborhood.

The Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) is scheduling extra Trolley service to accommodate 50,000 fans expected in East Village on opening day.

Fans can purchase Trolley day passes for every home game right on their mobile phones using the free mTicket app and park for free at an MTS park-and-ride facility.   You can get your mobile app by going tomTicket@sdmts.com on your mobile phone. 

All three Trolley lines will drop fans off at the doorstep to Petco Park.  Trolleys depart a minimum of every 15 minutes most of the day and every 7.5 minutes during peak hours until crowds diminish. 

 Trolley stops with high capacity free parking are in East County:

·         El Cajon Transit Center: 469 free parking spots (Orange Line/Green Line)

·         Spring Street Station: 404 free parking spots (Orange Line)

Santee, Gillespie Field and Grossmont Center also have free parking.

BAROQUE MASTERS AT CUYAMACA SPRING CONCERT APRIL 4rd

Cuyamaca College's spring concert series continues at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 3, with the San Diego Early Music Society's presentation of recorder music by Vivaldi, Corelli, Marcello and other Baroque masters as interpreted by Dorothee Oberlinger, recorder; Alexander Puliaev, harpsichord; and Marco Testori, cello.

The concert, "Il Flauto Veneziano," will be at the Cuyamaca College Performing Arts Theater (Building B). Student tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door or by calling the San Diego Early Music Society at (619) 291-8246.  General admission tickets are $18-$25 and can be purchased by phone or online at www.sdems.org.

The San Diego Early Music Society is a non-profit organization founded in 1981 to showcase the musical treasures of Europe's medieval, renaissance, and baroque periods, as performed on period instruments and in the musical style of the time.

Cuyamaca College's Performing Arts program has much to offer for the music enthusiast with a robust season of live performances.

ARMY CORPS TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING ON CAMP LOCKETT WEDNESDAY APRIL 6TH

Information will be presented on the upcoming Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study at Camp Lockett. Camp Lockett is a Formerly Used Defense Site located in San Diego County. Its property boundary surrounds the town of Campo.



Camp Lockett was initially used by the U.S. Army for cavalry training and border defense, then for training of troops during World War II. After its use as a training range, portions of Camp Lockett were used for the Mitchell Convalescent Hospital and for a prisoner of war camp. 



The purpose of the Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study is to determine the possible presence and extent of contamination resulting from the military training activities held at Camp Lockett. 



U.S. Army Corps of Engineers representatives will be available to provide information on the investigation and answer any questions the public may have.

MACK AND MABEL AT LAMPLIGHTERS THEATRE, LA MESA THROUGH APRIL 10th

Lamplighters Community Theatre will present the  Tony Award Nominee “Mack and Mabel” at the new Lamplighters Community Theatre in La Mesa through April 10.

Step back into yesteryear in this saga of the silent film era "when movies were movies." Mack and Mabel deals with the complex relationship between legendary film director Mack Sennett, a temperamental workaholic and the adorable Mabel Normand, a waitress who became one of his biggest stars. The story is told in flashback style by Mack, reminiscing about the past, his triumphs, his love affair with Mabel and her rise to stardom before talkies made the silent film industry obsolete.

RAMONA OPEN STUDIOS TOUR APRIL 9-10

Mark your calendars for the 13th annual Ramona Open Studios Tour on April 9 and 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. featuring 25 artists working in all mediums in 17 private studios located throughout Ramona.

Tickets are $10 each and are available at the Ramona Chamber of Commerce, 960 Main St., or call  760-789-1311. Tickets are also available at the studios on the days of the tour - follow the bright yellow & black Open Studios signs to the nearest studio.

ALPINE WOMAN’S CLUB VICTORIAN TEA APRIL 16

The Alpine Woman’s Club Victorian Tea has been compared to the teas at the Hotel Del Coronado and Westgate Hotel.  This year’s event will be held Saturday, April 16 with sittings at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. 

This is the perfect venue to showcase your finest hat, share good conversation with good friends and introduce your daughter or granddaughter to their first Victorian Tea. Entertainment will feature piano music by William D. Young, playing songs from yesteryear. There will also be a raffle, door prizes and other surprises. Period attire is recommended but not required.

 

Space is limited. Proceeds benefit a scholarship fund and the maintenance of the historic Town Hall which was built in 1899. So far they have given away $110,000 in scholarships to local Alpine graduating seniors.

CHALDEAN NIGHTS AT SYCUAN CASINO APRIL 21st

Usama Zakaria and Sami Shamsi headline a night of music and dancing with the Nissou Band, DJ Matthew and belly dancer Tarsiana.  Apr 21, 8:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Sycuan Casino in El Cajon.

SPRING GARDEN FESTIVAL AT CUYAMACA COLLEGE APRIL 23RD

The Spring Garden Festival at Cuyamaca College, in its 23rd year, is a family-friendly community celebration of spring and a greener future that attracts more than 3,000 visitors annually. This year's free festival, set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 23, features fun programs, exhibitors and demonstrations that will help you become a better gardener and learn how to conserve our precious resources.  Some festival highlights:

  • The renowned Cuyamaca College Ornamental Horticulture department will be holding its biggest plant sale of the year.
  • Faculty and students in the Ornamental Horticulture department

    will be presenting information on a wide variety of topics and answer questions.
  • Children's activities and exhibits.
  • Horticulture books from one of San Diego's best book resources.
  • Information about San Diego's garden clubs.
  • The Heritage of the Americas Museum at Cuyamaca College will be open to the public for free and will hold a drawing for prizes.

EL MONTE FLUME TRAIL HIKE MAY 7th

Hikers will discover the Historical Flume that was built in the late 1800s to bring water from the Cuyamaca Mountains to the City of San Diego. Hikers will learn about the fauna and flora of Blossom Valley hill, view a tunnel that was built in the late 1800s and enjoy the gorgeous views of El Monte Valley.

This hike begins with a strenuous quarter-of-a-mile up-hill switchback section before hitting the Historical Flume Trail; the remaining trail is easy-to-moderate. It is 1 mile west of the tunnel and 1.5 mile east of the tunnel.

Meet the ranger at the staging area parking lot across street from the main park. Wear appropriate hiking shoes, sun protection and bring water. Inclement weather will cancel this event.  Saturday May 7 from 9 a.m.  to 11 a.m.
