May 10, 2016 (Chicago) - After a rain out yesterday, the Padres were ready to get back in action and start a three-game series against the red-hot Chicago Cubs.  Cesar Vargas took the mound for the Padres against Jon Lester for the Cubs.

The Cubs waited an inning to start their beatdown and in the second, Addison Russell doubled to score Ben Zobrist and Chicago took a 1-0 lead.

In the third, Kris Bryant, the first overall pick in 2013, lined it to left and drove in two runs and the North Siders took a 3-0 lead.  Zobrist singled and drove in Anthony Rizzo and the Cubs went up 4-0.  David Ross hit a sacrifice fly and drove in Zobrist for a 5-0 Cubs lead.

The Pads got one back with Melvin Upton Jr.’s solo homer in the fourth to make the score 5-1 Cubs.

But the Cubs kept going.  Zobrist lined it to right in the Cubs’ half of the fourth and drove in Jason Heyward to make the score 6-1 Cubs.

The Pads chipped away a little bit in their half of the fifth with an Alexei Ramirez double that drove in Jose Pirela and the lead was cut to four at 6-2 Cubs. Ramirez came out of the game with a hamstring injury.  He was replaced by Adam Rosales.  Jon Jay hit a nice double to right center that drove in Rosales and the Cubbies saw their lead reduce to 6-3.

In the seventh, Russell tripled and drove in a pair and the Cubs went up 8-3.

The game seemed out of reach for the Padres as expected until the eighth when Alex Dickerson hit his first career home run, a grand salami to bring the Pads to within one.  8-7 Cubs with an inning and a half left.

But despite that, the Cubs would hold on to win 8-7.  The Padres and Cubs will play a doubleheader tomorrow to make up for the rain out yesterday.  The first game will be at 10:05 a.m. and the second will be at 5:05 p.m.  Colin Rea and Kyle Hendricks will start the 10:05 game.

In transaction news, the Padres claimed left hander Keith Hessler off of waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks.
