July 31, 2011 (Cleveland National Forest) – On Saturday, August 13, the San Diego Archaeological Center will host a presentation on volunteer opportunities including the Cleveland National Forest heritage program, “Passport in Time.” The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the San Diego Archaeological Center, 16666 San Pasqual Valley Road in Escondido.

Passport in Time is a volunteer archaeology and historic preservation program through the U.S. Forest Service. Volunteers work with professional Forest Service archaeologists and historians in national forests on archaeological survey and excavation, rock art restoration, archival research, historic structure restoration, oral history gathering, and analysis and curation of artifacts.

Representatives will also be on hand from the Cleveland National Forest (CNF) Trails and Wilderness program, the Forest Fire Lookout Association, the Laguna Mountain Volunteer Association, the Santa Ana Mountains National History Association, Back to Natives, and the California Archaeological Site Stewardship Program.

These groups help provide recreational and environmental opportunities for visitors, restore forest fire lookouts (including a lookout station on Palomar Mountain), restore wildlands featuring native plants, and other volunteer opportunities.

The presentation is free for Archaeological Center members. For non-members, a suggested donation is $5, or $15 for families, Scout troops or packs. For more information, contact Annemarie Cox at acox@sandiegoarchaeology.org or call (760) 291-0370.
