“A perfect summer day is when the sun is shining, the breeze is blowing, the birds are singing, and the lawn mower is broken.” - James Dent.

July 15, 2010 (San Diego’s East County) -- While you enjoy summer, keep in mind some items you can purchase now that enable you to stretch your dollar and save money. Here is a list of non-food bargains: appliances, furniture, gym memberships, men’s suits and paint.

Appliances:   Watch for special discounts now, according to Carolyn Forte, the homecare director of Good Housekeeping Institute. What makes buying an appliance an even better bargain is you can combine lower sales prices, tax credits and energy star rebates together to help you save even more money. If you need a new washer, dryer, refrigerator or other high-ticket item here are three websites for you to checkout:

Furniture:
New furniture will in the showrooms in August and that means July is a time for guaranteed low prices. Jackie Hirschhaut, vice president of public relations and marketing for American Home Furnishing Alliance, says, “Stores have clearance sales to make room for new inventory. For instance, it might be the same wooden frame for sofas with different upholstery in new colors for fall.”

Men’s Suits:
Suits will be marked down as much as 30% as stores are preparing for the new fall fashions and want to sell the remaining spring suits to make way for the new inventory. If you are thinking it’s time to upgrade your wardrobe, now’s the time for you to shop for a new suit.

Gym memberships:
Many people are outside playing and new gym memberships plummet at this time of year so you can save money, negotiate a better deal. The gym is less crowded so you spend less time waiting for your turn to use the equipment.

Paint:
Interior and exterior paints are on sale during the summer so if painting your house is on your to-do list take advantage of this time to buy paint. Even if it’s not the time to apply that paint to your walls, you might want to buy it now and have it on hand for later in the year.
