January 1, 2012 (San Diego’s East County) – Rose Hooper and her two teenage children lost their Jamul home in a fire December 29, two years after Rose’s husband died of cancer. Now Nick Baldwin, an El Cajon business owner, has started a drive to collect donated items to help this family in need.

"This is my neighbor and I want to help," Baldwin said. Donated blankets, warm clothes, coats, gift cards, and other needed items may be dropped off to Scar Offroad, 930 East Washington Avenue in El Cajon, or call his shop at 619-966-9935 to arrange a drop-off at Baldwin’s home in Jamul.

Kim Hamilton, editor of the Deerhorn Valley Antler, said the Hoopers built their home in Jamul 23 years ago. “Our hearts go out to the family,” she says, adding, “I’m working with Kim Beales (editor of the new website www.Jamul.com) to set up a few drop-off points (offered up our place for Deerhorn) to make it easier for folks to donate.”

The home was located at the junction of Lawson Valley Road and Skyline Truck Trail. The blaze was so intense that it resulted in a traffic shut down for several hours. The home was a total loss, though firefighters were able to salvage some of the family’s belonging.

ECM’s editor plans a trip to Deerhorn Valley within the week and can bring a few small items, if anyone wishes to drop them by her La Mesa home contact editor@eastcountymagazine.org or call 619-698-7617. Larger items should be taken to the drop off points listed above.
