DON'T GO KABOOM: CALL BEFORE YOU DIG

August 3, 2014 (San Diego’s East County) – National 811 day, appropriately on August 11th, urges people to call 811 before doing ANY type of digging. That means homeowners in their gardens as well as contractors. The service is free; two days notice is requested for an inspection to locate and mark underground lines.

Southern California Gas reported more than 2,400 "dig-ins" or preventable incidents last year– up more than 300 from the previous year. It’s not just contractors – there are plenty of home gardeners who hit a gas line…which can be very dangerous.  Most homeowners don’t realize that their gas line could be inches below ground level—or that an explosion could destroy your home or worse, cost lives. (See photo of a home destroyed after a worker hit a one-inch gas line, causing an explosion that killed two people.)
