July 14, 2016 (San Diego) - The Padres have traded starting pitcher Drew Pomeranz to the Boston Red Sox today, the Union Tribune's Dennis Lin reports.
It is not indicated what the Padres will get in return, but Lin proposes that it may be one of the BoSox' better minor league prospects.
Pomeranz, who pitched a scoreless inning in Tuesday's All-Star Game at Petco Park, is 8-7 with a 2.47 ERA in 17 starts with the Padres. Opponents had the lowest batting average against him in the National League (.184) and his 10.1 strikeouts were the highest in the NL.
The Red Sox are in DIRE need of pitching. They already have a good core starting rotation in David Price, Steven Wright, Rick Porcello and Eduardo Rodriguez. With Pomeranz's addition, the Sox will most likely have a five-man rotation now. The hope is to build the starting rotation so the less-than-reliable bullpen won't have to do as much work.
The Red Sox will be Pomeranz's fifth team he's played for.
In other transaction news, the Padres have signed infielders Ethan Skender and G.K. Young and outfielders Jack Suwinski and Trevyne Carter. They have now signed 31 of the 43 overall picks.

Pretty happy about this trade
We NEED starting pitching so our bullpen won't have to start as early in ballgames (yes, yes, I'm a Red Sox fan writing about the Padres...). Hopefully this will convince Dave Dombrowski to designate Clay Buchholz for assignment.
