December 20, 2010 (San Diego) -- A winter holiday crackdown by 14 local law enforcement agencies resulted in 122 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs from 12:01 a.m. Friday, December 18 to midnight Saturday, December 19. That’s more than double the 57 DUI arrests made during the same period in 2009. Fortunately, no fatalities associated with DUIs were reported this weekend.

Through year's end, DUI checkpoints, sting operations, multi-agency task force operations and warrant/ probation sweeps will be conducted by local law enforcement agencies.

All of the details will be focused on making the roads safer for all motorists during the holiday travel by removing DUI offenders from the equation.

San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore reminds all motorists, “If you are going to drink, please have a safe ride arranged before the end of the night.” He continued, “If you make the bad choice to drink and drive, you will be caught and taken to jail by one of the law enforcement agencies in the county.

All regularly scheduled traffic and patrol officers will focus efforts at stopping and arresting DUI drivers during their normal shifts.”

Police, Sheriff and the CHP encourage all motorists to report drunk drivers by calling 911. Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

DUI arrest data collection will continue through New Year’s weekend, ending at midnight on Sunday, January 2, 2011.
