November 9,2015 (San Diego's East County)--East County Magazine founded and operates the East County Alert Service, which provides wildfire and other emergency alerts free via e-mail and Twitter.  You can sign up for our alerts  here:  http://www.eastcountymagazine.org/wild-fire-alerts .  Major alerts are posted also on East County Magazine’s Facebook Page.

We’ve recently learned about additional sources of information during local emergencies and other incidents of interest. The East County Emergency Updates page on Facebook (no relation to East County Alerts) is run by Santee resident Tina Nunez as a resource for East County and surrounding areas to help protect safety and well being of those in our communities and our neighbors.  Her site can be a helpful adjunct to our own alerts during developing situations in our region. In addition, the Brush Fire Partyline on Facebook includes timely posts on emergencies in our region.

Nunez says she has 23,830 followers on the East County Emergeny Updates Facebook page. She monitors scanners to answer questions such as: Why is a helicopter circling over my house?  Do I smell smoke?  What happened to the power?  Why are there police officers at my child's school?  Need accident information?

ECEU is for residents of Alpine, Borrego Springs, Campo, Descanso, Dulzura, El Cajon,Flinn Springs, Jamul, Julian, Lakeside, La Mesa, Lemon Grove, Pine Valley, Poway, Ramona, Rancho San Diego, Santa Ysabel, Santee, Spring Valley & other surrounding East County communities including those in our beautiful back country who want to stay current on information including & not limited to fires, police activity, crime alerts, neighborhood watch, car accidents, traffic and weather hazards or advisories, school lockdowns, power outages, missing persons, Amber alerts, lost and found pets, health alerts, product recalls, suspicious activiites, and wanted persons.

Nunez notes, “The initial information posted can change quickly & ECEU does its best to update when new information comes available.  Please remember that I am volunteer....it's just me, myself & I here at ECEU.  Your patience is greatly appreciated.  While following an incident & to ensure you receive the most current updates, remember to frequently "REFRESH" your page. Readers are encouraged to use this page to inform & communicate with each other on any situation in your area at  www.facebook.com/eastcountyemergencyupdates

Brush Fire Partyline was founded in 2010 by a Lakeside resident, Dennis Richardson, seeking to provide timely information on brush fires in his community, though the site has expanded to include a wide range of incidents from crime to fires.  Initially started just for neighbors, it now has thousands of followers.

Brush Fire Partyline has links where you can listen to scanners live online, a very helpful source for monitoring developing emergencies in your area.  You can also post comments on breaking news and check posts including photos left  by others on the Brush Fire Partyline's timeline.

BFPL, because we are all neighbors, not motivated by money

There is nothing better than putting the word out about a start of a brush fire when we hear the call go out on the scanners in extreme fire conditions and being thankful for the results. Here is one example that sticks out in my mind. It was extreme fire conditions in San Diego's East County. I hear a call go out over the scanner for a large response of fire equipment being dispatched to the start of a wild land fire, only to hear when the fire crews arrive on scene, the first engine reported back to fire dispatch that the fire was extinguished by locals! Later we learned that a fan of BFPL posted that she read our post and called her dad to warn him. He was in his house, ran out outside to find the fire burning on his property that was located on a private ranch. He jumped in his water truck and put out the fire in a few minutes. This fire was caused by down electrical lines in a wind storm. Thank you 29,000 Brush Fire Partyline Fans and our BFPL Admins of the East County Page for all doing your part and making the page what it is . Dennis Richardson 'Brush Fire Partyline' reports local conditions free of click-to-pay ads and/or T-shirt sales or self-promotional efforts. We believe in a truly volunteer community-effort, where 'neighbors help neighbors' because they care about their county or town. BFPL Volunteers work 24/7 when available to gather and provide up-to-date information throughout many California regions, whether preventative or during local emergencies. (Admins and editors are not compensated monetarily for their efforts.)
