Man who set five wildfires in San Diego’s backcountry gets 9 years in prison (Los Angeles Times)

A Poway man convicted in August of setting a series of small fires alongside semi-rural roads after gambling at local casinos has been sentenced to nine years and four months in prison. Jonathan Cohen, 45, who investigators believe has been setting wildfires in San Diego’s backcountry for years, was convicted of starting five fires along Lake Wohlford Road in Valley Center, Wildcat Canyon Road in Lakeside and Highway 67 in 2014 and 2015.

In the first six months of this year, Marla Marshall logged 55 nights away from home conducting the people’s business. The total climbs to more than 300 since the beginning of 2013, almost one out of every four nights on the road.

Cameras Keep Watch Over Fire-Prone Regions Across San Diego County (KPBS)

Dozens of earthquake sensors located atop mountains and hillsides across San Diego County are also being used to help detect wildfires. The high-tech instruments that measure seismic motion and monitor climate hazards, are also equipped with cameras that allow fire officials to keep watch over remote fire-prone regions.

Souplantation owner files for bankruptcy protection (San Diego Union-Tribune)

Garden Fresh Restaurant Corp., a San Diego-based company that owns and operates 123 Souplantation and Sweet Tomatoes restaurants in the U.S., filed Monday for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Director Talks About San Diego County PERT (KPBS)

A Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT) was unable to aid Alfred Olango last week because, according to El Cajon police Chief Jeff Davis, the team was responding to another call and could not make it to the scene in time.  There are 41 PERT teams in San Diego County. PERT Director Mark Marvin said more PERT teams would help because since 2009 there has been an 84 percent increase in mental health calls in San Diego County. In the same time period, the population has increased 5 percent.

New airline to fly out of Carlsbad (San Diego Union-Tribune)

An upstart airline said this week it will soon offer charter flights from Carlsbad to San Jose starting at $499 each way.   Irvine-based JetSuite said it will fly four roundtrip flights a week from McClellan-Palomar Airport to Mineta San Jose International Airport.

Librarians Learn Mental Health First Aid in San Diego (KPBS)

The training, part of a $1 million mental health initiative from the California State Library, certified about 30 librarians as trainers, who will conduct training sessions of their own for local librarians.

New California fault line: A path to better earthquake models? (CS Monitor)

Seismologists in California have discovered evidence of a new fault line that runs along the eastern edge of the inland Salton Sea, parallel to the infamous San Andreas fault (SSAF), according to research published this week.  Up until now the Salton trough fault (STF) managed to remain hidden, despite how well-surveyed and seismically active the state of California is, because it is underwater.

Convictions now required to seize cash or property from criminal suspects (San Diego Union-Tribune)

Law enforcement officials across California will no longer be able to share in the proceeds of most cash and property seizures unless there is a criminal conviction resulting from the case, under a bill signed Thursday by Gov. Jerry Brown.

California Gets New Police Shooting Database (KPBS)

With the ongoing debate over policing in America, the new database “URSUS” will record all police shootings and use of force incidents in the state.
