Youth symphony seeks students for auditions

January 5, 2012 (East County) -- The well-known East County Youth Symphony (ECYS) is going to form a new Wind Orchestra (concert band) which will be conducted by Joe Dyke, former instrumental music teacher in the La Mesa-Spring Valley School District. The band is a free (no tuition or fees) program for musicians ages 11 to 18 with at least one year of experience.

"This is a great opportunity for band students who are looking for more performing opportunities to supplement their school involvement," Dyke says.

Students who are interested in auditioning can find the application form on the ECYS website.

Auditions for the concert band will take place on January 24, and 31 at the La Mesa Middle School Music Building, 4200 Parks Avenue, La Mesa. However, audition date/time may be adjusted in some cases. The earlier you apply, the more likely you are to reserve a more convenient audition date/time.

The concert band audition requirements include:
  • Five minutes of contrasting material from the candidate's repertoire (candidate must provide two extra copies of the music which will be returned at the conclusion of the audition)
  • Scales: Concert ABCEF
  • There will also be required excerpts that can be found here.
  • The audition may also include sight-reading

Students may also want to review the audition faqs and the rules for the concert band.
