June 9, 2017 (San Diego) - We’re going to skip what happened yesterday and move right into tonight.  The Padres returned home for some interleague action against the Kansas City Royals.  Eric Skoglund started on the hill for the Royals against Jhoulys Chacin.

You can give the Padres the benefit of the doubt and say they only won because they were playing the second-to-last place-ranked team in the AL Central, but the Friars came to play tonight.  Austin Hedges singled to left center to score Wil Myers in the first to give the Padres a 1-0 lead.

Chacin worked some pitcher magic in the third with a double that scored Erick Aybar, kicking Skoglund out of the game.  He was replaced by Scott Alexander, who struck out Wil Myers to keep the damage to one run and the Padres led 2-0.

They came to play, but Salvador Perez did too.  The Royals slugger hit his 12th home run of the year on a deep shot to left to tie the game.

But Matt Szczur saved the day and ended the pitcher’s duel in the seventh with a blast of a solo home run to left to put the Padres back up in front.  Alexander left and was replaced by the Australian Peter Moylan, who struck out the side to end the inning, but the Padres took a 3-2 lead.

Franchy Cordero added insurance in the eighth with a two-run double.  Yangervis Solarte hit a pop fly that confused Whit Merrifield and Jorge Bonifacio and landed for a single and an RBI to make the score 6-2.

Mike Moustakas tried to rally for the Royals with a sac fly in the ninth that scored Lorenzo Cain, but the Padres prevailed with a nice double play to end the game and come away with a 6-3 win to start off the weekend series with Kansas City.

Game two is tomorrow at 1:10 pm and will be televised on FS1 and not FSSD.  Ian Kennedy starts for Kansas City against Miguel Diaz.
