April 28, 2017 (San Francisco) - The Padres don’t do so well in Phoenix.  They don’t do so well in the Bay Area either, but let’s see how this year’s rebuilding squad does in a three-game series with the NL West rival Giants.  Luis Perdomo started on the mound for the Padres against Jeff Samarzdija for the Giants.

The Padres just gave up on scoring early completely and the Giants took advantage.  Joe Panik scored on an error in the first to give San Francisco a 1-0 lead.  Conor Gillaspie singled to score Brandon Belt and it was 2-0 Giants.

But Ryan Schimpf saved the day in the fifth with a two-run blast to tie the game.  Austin Hedges singled and Cory Spangenberg scored and the Padres took a 3-2 lead.

But in the Giants’ half of the fifth, Michael Morse hit a sac fly to score Belt and the game was once again knotted at three.

The Padres thought they had hope.  Ryan Buchter was apparently doubtful and decided to give up a home run to rookie Christian Arroyo to give the Giants the 4-3 win.

Game two is tomorrow at 6:05 p.m.  Jhoulys Chacin will start for the Padres against the waning Matt Cain for the Giants.
