July 13, 2018 (San Diego) - After failing against the Dodgers, the Padres were ready to take a break from the NL West and take on an NL Central team in the Cubs before the All-Star break.  Tyler Chatwood started for Chicago against Clayton Richard.

This time with the bases loaded, the Padres capitalized in the first.  Eric Hosmer beat a throw to first, allowing Travis Jankowski to score, but that was all the Padres could get and they led 1-0 after one.

Of course, this came back to haunt them.  In the second, Ian Happ grounded into left center with the bases loaded.  It scored two to get the Cubs on the board and the 2-1 lead.

But surprisingly, the Padres fought back in their half of the second when Jankowski blasted a two-run home run, his second of the season, to give the Padres the lead again, 3-2.

They held that lead for a few innings, but it went away in the fifth with USD alum Kris Bryant’s double to right that scored Albert Almora Jr. to tie the game.

It looked like we were going to extras, but Austin Hedges saved the day.  He battled Carl Edwards Jr. and eventually won, lining an RBI double to right that scored Manuel Margot and the Padres won game one in true Cinderella story fashion, 4-3.

Except they didn’t.

As we all know, no Padres game would be complete without the ultimate Padres’ing:  a blown save.  With two outs in the ninth, Brad Hand gave up an RBI double to Anthony Rizzo, who lined it to left to score Jason Heyward and the game was tied.  We went to extras.

The Padres’ing continued into the 10th.  Javi Baez stole second.  Then the throw got past short into center for an E2.  Baez went to third.  Then Margot bobbled it.  Baez came home.  The Cubs won 5-4 to take game one thanks to God-tier Padres’ing.

Game two is tomorrow night at 7:10 p.m.  Kyle Hendricks starts for Chicago against Luis Perdomo.
