April 24, 2017 (Phoenix) - Some people might be dreading the upcoming four-game trip to Arizona, but the Padres did win a series against the second-place Diamondbacks last week.  Then again, they were swept on their last four-game trip by the worst team in baseball...well, only time will tell.  Jhoulys Chacin started on the mound for the Padres against Zack Greinke for the Dbacks.

The Dbacks did what the Padres usually do and score first and early.  David Peralta hit a solo homer in the first to give Arizona a 1-0 lead.  The Padres probably felt like nothing they do would please anyone.

Yasmany Tomas added on in the fourth with a double to score Jake Lamb and the Dbacks extended their lead to 2-0.

Today wasn’t one of Chacin’s good days.  In the fifth, Chris Owings rocked him with a grand slam that catapulted the snakes to a 6-0 lead.

Austin Hedges hit a sac fly in the sixth to score Yangervis Solarte to put the Padres on the board.  The Dbacks still led 6-1.

But the Dbacks stayed above the cut with Chris Hermann’s single in the sixth that scored Tomas to get the lead back to six, 7-1.

A run came in for the Padres in the seventh on Manuel Margot’s single that scored Jabari Blash and the score was 7-2 Dbacks.  Wil Myers got the Padres back into it with a three-run blast and the snakes’ lead was suddenly two, 7-5.

Hedges brought the Padres within one in the eighth with his sixth home run of the year:  a solo shot to make it 7-6, but the rally stopped there.  Ex-Padre Fernando Rodney got the save and the Dbacks took game one 7-6.

Game two is tomorrow at the same time:  6:40 p.m.  Clayton Richard starts for the Padres against Patrick Corbin for Arizona.

Transaction news:

  • Travis Jankowski placed on 10-day DL (right foot bone bruise)
  • Jabari Blash recalled from El Paso
