June 14, 2017 (San Diego) - Last night was as good an outing as we’ve seen from the Padres so far this season. If we’re being honest, and this isn’t an insult, nothing will top it. But today, the Padres went for the sweep against the Reds in this Wednesday matinee. Amir Garrett started for the Reds against Jhoulys Chacin.
Unfortunately for the Padres, the Reds were determined to avoid the sweep. Jose Peraza hit a solo homer in the first to give Cincy a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth, Joey Votto followed it up with a solo homer of his own to extend the lead to 2-0.
Hunter Renfroe eased the Padres’ worries with a two-run blast in the sixth to tie the game.
Franchy Cordero gave the Padres the go-ahead with a single in the seventh that scored Matt Szczur. Renfroe hit a sac groundout to score Jose Pirela and the Padres completed the sweep over Cincinnati with a 4-2 win.
The Padres get a well-deserved off day tomorrow and travel to Milwaukee for a weekend series with the Brewers. First pitch is on Friday at 5:10 p.m. Miguel Diaz will start against Junior Guerra for the Brewers.
