April 2, 2018 (San Diego) - Well, that was a very...Padres opening series.  Ahem….moving on...the Padres got to test the waters against an NL West rival, the Rockies, starting tonight for four games.  Chad Bettis started for Colorado against Bryan Mitchell.

The Rockies are just recovering from an average opening series, but it’s the Padres, so you know, this is basically a free spot on a bingo card.  And they took advantage in the first with Nolan Arenado’s sac lineout that scored Charlie Blackmon to give the Rockies a 1-0 lead.

But we take that snark back because in the home half of the first, Wil Myers popped a solo homer to right center to tie the game.

But we were back to square one in the third when Carlos Gonzalez hit a lined double down the third base line to score D.J. LeMahieu.  Gonzalez came home on an RBI double by Ian Desmond.  The Rockies were back out in front 3-1.

The Padres made it back to square two in the home half of the third with Carlos Asuaje’s double that scored Eric Hosmer, but the Rockies still led 3-2.

The Rockies escaped danger in the fifth when Desmond launched a two-run homer to widen the gap to 5-2.

The Padres thought that was bad enough and were ready to take another L, but Chuck Nasty and LeMahieu didn’t as they both blasted back-to-back homers to right and left center to give the Rockies a 7-2 lead.

Cory Spangenberg made a last ditch effort in the home half of the ninth with a leadoff solo homer to center and Jose Pirela drove home Hunter Renfroe on a stand-up RBI triple, but the Rockies put a stop to the rally and took game one 7-4.  The Padres are now *deep breath* 0-4 to start the season.

Tomorrow’s game two is set for 7:10 p.m.  Kyle Freeland starts for the Rockies against the new and improved Tyson Ross.
