July 5, 2018 (Phoenix) - After being swept by the As, the Padres headed to Arizona and back to the NL West for a four-game weekend series with the Diamondbacks.  Eric Lauer started against Shelby Miller for the Dbacks.

The Padres were surprisingly able to take advantage of the NL West-leading snakes quickly.  After Carlos Asuaje tripled, Wil Myers drove him in with an RBI single to left to give the Padres a 1-0 lead.

The Dbacks tied it up in the second.  After Ketel Marte’s leadoff double, Jake Lamb singled up the middle to score him.

It wasn’t deadlocked for long; in the fifth, Austin Hedges blasted a solo homer skied to left to give the Padres the lead again, 2-1.

Myers added more in the sixth in a big way with a skied triple to center field that almost left the yard.  Asuaje scored, Myers got himself a triple.  Nick Ahmed Padres’d, allowing Eric Hosmer’s bouncing single to go up the middle and score Myers.  After the Padres kicked Miller out, Freddy Galvis looped an RBI single to center off of Andrew Chafin to score Hosmer to make it 5-1 Padres.

More came in the seventh on Asuaje’s RBI single to right that scored Travis Jankowski to make it 6-1 Padres.

Marte tried to help the Dbacks in the eighth with a two-run blast to left, his seventh homer of the year, to cut the lead in half to 6-3, but that’s all they’d get as the Padres took game one 6-3.

Tomorrow’s game two is at 6:40 p.m.  Joey Lucchesi starts against Zack Godley for the Dbacks.
