The United States Senate voted to pass a defense bill today that would require young women to sign up for a potential military draft for the first time in U.S. history.

Olympics nightmare: Rio declares financial disaster before games (Yahoo! News)

The acting governor of Rio de Janeiro state has declared a state of financial disaster so he has more leeway to manage the state's scarce resources less than two months Brazil hosts the Olympic Games…Rio's state government is in such dire straits that two of its hospitals were taken over by the Rio de Janeiro city government to allow doctors to keep receiving their paychecks. Some police stations are so underfunded that they have asked neighbors to donate basic items like toilet paper. Public workers and retirees have suffered months-long delays in receiving their money.

Fallujah faces humanitarian disaster (BBC)

A humanitarian disaster is unfolding in Falluja following a civilian exodus from the Iraqi city, aid workers warn. Some 80,000 people have fled during a four-week government offensive to drive back so-called Islamic State fighters, says the UN. A further 25,000 civilians are likely on the move, the organisation adds.Aid workers are struggling to provide food, water and medicine to people who are sleeping in the open in hopelessly overcrowded camps outside the city.

British lawmaker dies after shooting and stabbing attack that stuns nation (Reuters)

A British member of parliament was shot dead in the street on Thursday, causing deep shock across Britain and the suspension of campaigning for next week's referendum on the country's EU membership. Jo Cox, 41, a lawmaker for the opposition Labour Party and a vocal advocate for Britain remaining in the European Union, was attacked while preparing to meet constituents in Birstall near Leeds in northern England.

US and Japan request urgent UN meeting on North Korea launch (San Diego Union-Tribune)

The United States and Japan on Wednesday requested an urgent meeting of the U.N. Security Council on North Korea's launch of two ballistic missiles.

Family of U.S. student killed in Paris attacks sues social media companies (Reuters)

The family of a California design student killed in November's attacks in Paris sued Twitter Inc, Google and Facebook Inc, claiming the social media companies provide "material support" to the militant group Islamic State.
