January 1, 2015 (El Cajon) – New Year’s Eve ended in tragedy for an elderly El Cajon couple. Rosie Mondejar, 80, and her husband, Merlin, were struck by separate vehicles while crossing the street shortly after 8 p.m. in the 300 block of West Washington. Both were transported to a hospital, where Rosie was pronounced dead of serious injuries. Merlin was treated for minor injuries and released.

The drivers involved in this collision remained on scene and have been fully cooperative in this investigation, says Lt. Randy Soulard with El Cajon Police, adding that alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the tragic accident. “The El Cajon Police Department would like to express our condolences for the victims and their families affected by this incident, as well as for the drivers and witnesses involved,” Lt. Soulard states. “We would also like to express our thanks to the paramedics who responded and did everything they could for the victims involved in this collision.” In addition, the department wishes to remind pedestrians to always cross at intersections controlled by traffic signals and crosswalks. When walking at night, wear bright or reflective colors that are more visible to drivers.
