September 29, 2014 (San Diego) –Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation President Jay Wilson announces the Kumeyaay Lake Poetry Campout, a three day, family-friendly poetry workshop weekend at Mission Trails Regional Park's Kumeyaay Lake Campgrounds (Two Father Junipero Serra Trail, San Diego, CA, 92119). The event is open to for 12 participants (ages 10 years old to adult, three camp sites can be reserved), Friday, October 10, Saturday, October 11, and Sunday, October 12, 2014, with check in time Friday, October 11, 2014, at 5:00 p.m.
September 26, 2014 (Lemon Grove)--“Let the insanity begin,” says Helen Ofield.” Soroptimist International of Lemon Grove will hold its 10th Annual Western Roundup and Chili Cook-off on Nov. 1 from 6 - 9 p.m. in the parish hall of St. John of the Cross Church, 8086 Broadway, Lemon Grove. Tickets are $20 in advance or at the door.
September 26, 2014 (Ramona) – The Ramona Art and Wine Festival, a benefit for the Ramona H.E.A.R.T. Mural project, will be held on Saturday, November 1st from 12 to 5 p.m. The location is the Amy Strong Castle at Mt. Woodson in Ramona.

September 22, 2014 (El Cajon) – You’re invited to come and enjoy authentic German food, such as bratwurst, ox-on-the-spit, potato pancakes, sauerkraut, red cabbage, pretzels, and Bavarian pastries—all at the German American Club’s annual Oktoberfest in El Cajon. The festivities take place on two weekends, September 26 through 28 and October 3rd through 5th. Of course, you’ll also find plenty of German beers, as well as entertainment by the Guggenbach-Buam, all the way from Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

September 26, 2014 (Lakeside)- Project Wildlife will introduce you to the fascinating and unique world of bats on November 22 from 11 a.m to 12:30 p.m at Lakeside River Park. You can also meet Animal Ambassador Daisy, a Mexican Free-Tailed Bat in this indoor classroom located on Lakeside's River Park Property.
September 24, 2014 (La Mesa)--The City of La Mesa will host its fifth annual Senior Expo on Thursday, October 9, 2014. With a wide variety of speakers and exhibitors, Senior Expo will offer free "one-stop shopping" for all adults facing life changes that may affect their independence, or for those who would like great tips on safety and security. Senior Expo will be held at the La Mesa Community Center, 4975 Memorial Drive, La Mesa 91942, from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm, and is supported by funding from the San Diego Association of Governments.
September 24, 2014 (San Diego’s East County) – This week’s Destination East County features some major events this weekend, including Oktoberfests, a major music festival and street fair, a fiesta, a parade, plus concerts by the Eagles and a Barbra Streisand tribute artist. Plus we’ll have previews of some delicious events coming up soon, including Julian Apple Days, the East County Vintners Harvest Days, a Pumpkin Festival, and Jacumba Hot Springs centennial celebration! September 22, 2014 (La Mesa)--The La Mesa Oktoberfest is one of East County’s biggest street festivals, drawing 200,000 people every year. This year’s Oktoberfest will be held October 3-5 in the heart of La Mesa’s downtown village on La Mesa Boulevard between 4th Avenue and Acadia.
The event, sponsored by the La Mesa Chamber of Commerce and the La Mesa Village Merchants Association, began as a small street fair over 35 years ago. Now the three-day bash features over 250 vendors, food including German bratwurst and a beer garden, kids’ activities and entertainment ranging from German music to classic rock and roll.
September 20, 2014 (Potrero) –You’re invited to join the East County Vintners Wine Group for its second annual Mountain Empire Country Harvest Celebration on Saturday, October 11 from 12 noon to sundown. The festivities take place at the Jim and Janet Wright Ranch and Vineyard in scenic Potrero, just 30 minutes east from Jamul off Highway 94/Campo Road. Smokey barbecue with all the trimmings and wine sampling by local vineyards and wineries are among the activities, along with a silent auction and door prizes.
September 18, 2014 (Ramona)--Gaze up close at World War II fighter airplanes, experimental aircraft, and firefighting air tankers and helicopters. Tour an air traffic control tower. Check out hot classic cars and big-rig trucks. Maybe even get your face painted or shake Smokey's hand.
September 17, 2014 (San Diego’s East County) – This week’s Destination East County has some hot musical and theater events, also marking the start of Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations. Plus we’ll have previews of coming attractions, from a Fiesta in Spring Valley to the Viejas Days Parade.

September 19, 2014 (San Diego)--Over 100 different musical acts on eight stages are slated for the 2014 Adams Avenue Street Fair on September 27 and 28, which is one of the largest free music street fairs in California, according to the organizers. It also includes four beer gardens, 300 food and craft vendors, and giant carnival rides.
September 11, 2014 (Alpine) – Hot cars and spicy chili are all part of the Alpine Kiwanis 2-14 annual car show and chili cook-off event, which also features a pancake breakfast. The festivities take place on Saturday, September 20.
September 9, 2014 (Lemon Grove)--The Lemon Grove Historical Society and the Lemon Grove Oral History Project will celebrate local Hispanic heritage on Sept. 20 from 1 - 4 p.m. in the Rosemary Putnam Community Room of the Lemon Grove Library, 3001 School Lane.
September 10, 2014 (San Diego’s East County) - This week’s Destination East County has some wild events—from the “We Like it Wild” benefit for Project Wildlife to a wildlife tracking event, a storytelling session, and an effort to break a world record with a spectacular fireworks display. Plus we’ll have previews of future attractions, from a free kids care fest to a music festival in Julian , from theater and concert performances to a Somali Bantu African cultural celebration.
September 9, 2014 (Julian)--Quilt trails highlight the unique culture of communities, display historical art forms and encourage tourism. Over 130 quilt trails exist across the U.S.—and soon, the Julian Backcountry Quilt Trail will become the first in Southern California.
September 8, 2014 (Borrego Springs) – The 49th annual Borrego Days Desert Festival will take place October 24-26. Admission is free to this one-of-a-kind event, which welcomes snowbirds to the desert warmth at the start of the fall season.
September 9, 2014 (La Mesa)--The date has been announced for the 2014 Kids Care Fest, a free, family-oriented event open to the public featuring free health care screenings. This year’s Kids Care Fest will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20 at Briercrest Park, 9001 Wakarusa St., La Mesa. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Now in its 13th year, Kids Care Fest is presented by the Grossmont Healthcare District, La Mesa Park & Recreation Foundation and the City of La Mesa.
Organizers expect more than 1,000 children will receive free, potentially life-saving, health care screenings, including hearing, vision and dental screenings, from healthcare professionals.
September 7, 2014 (Rancho San Diego) - Cuyamaca Community College invites students and the public to join in a memorial ceremony honoring those who lost lives in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington D.C. that claimed over 3,000 lives.
September 5, 2014 (San Diego)—A cultural celebration featuring music, dance and cuisine of San Diego’s Somali-Bantu community will be held on Saturday, September 20 from 2-5 p.m. at the United Domestic Workers of America office, 4855 Seminole Drive, San Diego.
September 4, 2014 (San Diego's East County) - SoCal Parrot is hosting its 2nd Annual Picnic with the Parrots, “A Celebration of Eco-diversity” on Sunday, October 26th 2014. This event is SoCal Parrot’s annual fundraising event and is a rare chance for the public to visit and enjoy the wildlife rehabilitation facility and special animals in a dynamic natural setting.

Autumn is in the air – and this week’s Destination East County activities reflect that. This weekend you can enjoy apples, trains, grape stomping and a pow-wow! Plus we have a preview of coming attractions, from an attempt to break the world record for fireworks, to an end-of-summer music festival.
August 30, 2014 (Alpine) – Viejas Casino & Resort will attempt to launch the world’s longest chain of fireworks—more than 10,000 – to celebrates its 23rd anniversary on Friday, September 12th at 8 p.m. You’re invited to the festivities near the Viejas Hotel pool to witness the sky come alive with fireworks during this Guinness Book of World Records setting attempt.

August 30, 2014 (Julian) – For the 45th year, Julian celebrates the end of summer with music. The Julian Music Festival will be held at the Menghini Winery on September 20th from 1 to 8 p.m. This year’s event features bluegrass to celebrate the festival’s roots, Western ballads to remember the past, as well as music by current songwriters and singers.
Performers slated to appear include singer/songwriter Melanie Devaney, guitarist/singer Steve Ybarra, Cool Band Luke performing high energy favorites, and Trails and Rails performing train songs, cowboy tunes, pop, swing, vocal harmonies and whistling.
August 29, 2014 (Descanso)--Our Lady of Light Catholic Church in Descanso will hold its 77th Annual Deep Pit Barbecue on Sunday August 31st of the Labor Day weekend. The Festivities will start at 11 a.m. and continue until 6 p.m.
The barbecue has been a major event of the mountain empire area since before World War II. It will be held on the Church grounds on Riverside drive in Descanso.
BARONA BAND OF MISSION INDIANS TO CELEBRATE TRADITIONAL NATIVE AMERICAN CULTURE AT 44TH ANNUAL POWWOW AUG. 29-31
August 27, 2014 (Lakeside) – The Barona Band of Mission Indians invites San Diego to experience Native American dancing, music and cuisine at the 44th annual Barona Powwow at the Barona Indian Reservation’s recently renovated Sports Park. The celebration starts on Friday, August 29 with gourd dancing at 6 p.m. and grand entry at 7 p.m. and continues throughout the weekend on Saturday and Sunday, August 30-31, from 1 to 11 p.m.

August 28, 2014 (San Diego’s East County) – This week’s activities in East County include living history presentations complete with mountain men and cowboys. It’s also the start of pow-wow season at Barona and football season for the Aztecs—plus we’ll tell you about an art show, free concerts and a family movie in the park. Plus we’ll have a preview of next week’s top events, including a popular annual tradition in East County’s wine-growing region: a grape stomp festa!
August 25, 2014 (Julian) - On of our backcountry’s popular annual activities is to roll up your pants, bare your feet and join in an annual harvest tradition. On September 6th, the Julian Grape Stomp Festa will be held at Menghini Winery.
August 23, 2014 (Campo)—The Pumpkin Express train ride will be running once again this fall to the Great Pumpkin Patch. The train departs from the historic Campo Depot at the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum and includes a “Haunted Train” tour. The one-hour train ride departs three times daily on October 11, 12, 18, 19, 25 and 26, with departures at 10 a.m, 12:15 p.m and 2:30 p.m.
