1ST ANNUAL POW-WOW AT CUYAMACA COLLEGE FEB. 7

 

 

January 21, 2015 (San Diego's East County) - Cuyamaca College will host its first annual pow-wow on February 7th from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.   The public is invited to enjoy gourd dancing at 10 a.m. followed by a grand entry at 11 a.m. There will also be Native American arts and crafts, fry bread and Indian tacos. Admission is free.

January 18, 2015 (San Diego) –Around the nation including here in San Diego a “4 Mile March” is set for Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, March 19th to build a new civil rights movement. Locally the march will begin at 1 p.m. at the City Heights Weingart Library, 3775 Fairmont Ave., and will end at the Malcolm X Library, 400 Roosevelt Street.

“The goal of every 4 Mile March in every city is the same: to bring awareness to the national epidemic of racial profiling and police violence, and to honor all the lives lost as a result,” a flyer for the event states.

TROUT REOPENER AT SANTEE LAKES JAN. 10-11

December 15, 2014 (San Diego’s East County) - The Mission Trails Regional Park Trail Guides will lead pre-dawn hikes to the area of the solstice observatory on Cowles Mountain on the 20th and 22nd of December. The Canyoneers of the San Diego Natural History Museum will lead the hike on the 21st.

December 12, 2014 (Ramona) –Jess Koehler from La Finquita Winery and Teri Kerns from Ramona Ranch Winery stopped by our studio this week to talk about Ramona’s growing wine industry and a very merry event this weekend. The Ramona East End Loop Holiday Wine Trail (otherwise known as “Get Your Merry On” takes place this Saturday and Sunday, December 13 and 14. 

The self-guided tour features six wineries with 18 tastings, food pairings, live music, crafts such as glass blowing and holiday shopping. Plus each winery offers its own unique ambience, from the subterranean wine cave at La Finquita to an outdoor patio at Ramona Ranch.

Lexington Avenue during business hours, Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and alternate Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Or, bring your toy to the live KOGO radio news broadcast of the Fire Truck/Toy Parade on Saturday, December 13, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon in the Target parking lot at 250 Broadway, in El Cajon.

November 26, 2014 (Lakeside) – Lakeside River Park Conservancy invites you to join in a winter stroll on December 13th from 9 a.m. to 10:30 am.  The free event will take you along a Lakeside promenade through autumn colored leaves of deciduous willow trees.  Pause on a wildlife observation deck to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature. Among the many species of birds in this riparian habitat are crested Phainopepla feeding on mistletoe berries high up in sycamore trees.

November 22, 2014 (Alpine) --The Saturday after Thanksgiving, November 29th, is a special day at the Lions Tigers and Bears ranch in Alpine. It is the day the animals celebrate with their version of a traditional Thanksgiving meal.

November 22, 2014 (Alpine) – You’re invited to an afternoon of yuletide fun watching animals open their Christmas presents at Lions, Tigers and Bears. The animal rescue facility hosts is annual Christmas Festival Fundraiser on Saturday, December 6th from 1-4 p.m.  You can also do holiday shopping at more than 40 vendor booths, enjoy food from Descanso Junction and visit Santa Claus. “This year we are putting out an extra special request for donated Christmas Trees that we can give to the animals on this special day. Trees are an amazing form of enrichment for the animals,” says founder Bobbi Brink. (Click here to donate a tree.)

In addition, a new bear habitat will be unveiled during the December 6th event featuring rescued bears Albert, Cherry Bomb, Teddy and Baloo.

You can view World War II aircraft and displays, see over 40 antique and classic cars, and meet Santa Claus.  Families are welcome to attend.  The museum is located at 1725 North Marshall Avenue in El Cajon at Gillespie Field.
