LA MESA FARMERS' MARKET TURNS 20: CELEBRATION PLANNED OCT. 25

 

October 17, 2013 (La Mesa)--On Friday, October 25 from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m., the City of La Mesa will celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the La Mesa Village Farmers’ Market.

The weekly market, held at La Mesa Civic Center, has become a Friday gathering place for La Mesans and East County residents. The celebration will include all the usual market amenities, plus a live DJ, free face-painting for kids, a booth decorating contest for vendors, and prize raffles. Shoppers will receive free 20th Anniversary shopping bags while supplies last and the City will also unveil new street banners featuring a special 20th Anniversary logo. The City of La Mesa invites citizens and visitors from throughout the region to join in celebrating this milestone.

ALL ABOARD THE PUMPKIN EXPRESS

The 2013 Pumpkin Express returns at the  Pacific Southwest Railway Museum in Campo This is the tenth annual Great Pumpkin event at the Museum.

Travel to the Great Pumpkin's Pumpkin Patch and tour the Haunted Train, where kids will pick out their own pumpkin and decorate it in the display building.

These trains are very popular and seating is limited, so reservations are required. Trains depart Saturdays and Sundays in October at 10 a.m., 12:15 p.m, and 2:30 p.m.

HALLOWEEN SPOOKTACULAR OCT. 26 AT MISSION TRAILS

 

October 16, 2013 (San Diego's East County ) -- The Third Annual Family Friendly Halloween Spooktacular will be presented by renowned storytellers Cynthia Griffin and Mary Holma from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the Mission Trails Regional Park Amphitheater. Children are encouraged to come in costume, and each child will receive a bag of Halloween treats.

20TH ANNUAL ALPINE FIRE DEPT. OPEN HOUSE ON OCTOBER 19

 

October 12, 2013 (Alpine) – The Alpine firefighters will be holding their 20th Annual Open House on October 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1364 Tavern Rd., Alpine.  It will be a fun day for the whole family with Fire K9 Pyro, Smokey the Bear, McGruff the crime dog and Sparky the fire dog.  The kids can enjoy face painting, balloons and a snake display.  Child I.D. and fingerprinting will be available courtesy of the Kiwanis Club.  There will also be food, fire displays, free gifts and raffles.

October 12, 2013 (Palomar) -- Palomar Mountain State Park' invites the public to its 3rd Annual "Apple Festival", Sunday October 27th from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is free to the park for this fun and educational occasion.

The Park has apple trees planted by homesteading pioneers over 100 years ago--and they're still producing delicious apples to this day.  Come spend the day at the Park to enjoy food, love folk music, square dancing, games, arts and crafts with an apple harvest theme.

The Fourth Annual Spring Valley Tailgate & BBQ Festival will take place on Sunday, October 20 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at  Troy Street between Bancroft Avenue and Central Avenue,  Initiated by the Spring Valley Chamber of Commerce and Cali Comfort Restaurant, the goal of the festival is to raise money youth sports programs in Spring Valley.

EL CAJON INVITES YOU TO FIRE EXPO OCTOBER 12

El Cajon's Fire Safety Expo Is October 12        

October 6, 2013 (El Cajon) -- It’s all about safety at the annual El Cajon Fire Safety Expo on Saturday, October 12, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at 100 E. Lexington Avenue. This event celebrates Fire Prevention Week and brings to the community a wide variety of safety and health information.

Meet firefighters and police officers from the City of El Cajon and see Police & Fire K-9 demonstrations.   Kiwanis Club of East San Diego County will be giving away free kids safety helmets (while supplies last), and Home Depot is back with their children’s safety workshop. See over 40 exhibits addressing important issues such as fire safety, disaster preparedness from the Office of Emergency Services and Heartland Fire & Rescue.

1ST SATURDAY NATURE WALK AT WRIGHT'S FIELD PRESERVE IN ALPINE OCT. 5

 

October 3, 2013 (Alpine) – On Saturday, October 5 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, join Restoration Ecologist Scott McMillan of AECOM as the environmental consulting firm begins its initial effort to restore our very own populations of the rare and endangered San Diego Thornmint at Wright's Field in Alpine.  During this walk, he will introduce our group to this tiny member of the mint family, which is a federally listed endangered plant that only grows in San Diego County. 

For those interested in getting more involved, McMillan and BCLT will be recruiting volunteers for more hands-on restoration of the Thornmint populations over the next few years.  Learn more about the thornmint and how you can help out at this event.   Group parks and meets at Joan MacQueen Middle School - 2001 Tavern Rd, Alpine.  Sponsored by: Back Country Land Trust.  Full calendar of events for Fall 2013 is available at www.bclt.org.

SPOOKY HAYRIDES AT THE JULIAN MINING COMPANY OCT. 18-19 & 25-26

 

Sept. 30, 2013 (Julian) – Get spooked on a hayride complete with embellished accounts of early miners at The Julian Mining Company, 4444 Hwy 78, Julian.  The rides will be departing at 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on October 18 – 19 & 25 -26.

You need to arrive a 1/2 hour before your ride begins. Enjoy complimentary popcorn, coffee and hot apple cider while you wait.

FAIR TRADE GIFT FAIRE OCT. 13 IN LA MESA

 

September 30, 2013 (La Mesa) – A wide variety of hand-crafted, fairly traded items will be available at a La Mesa gift faire scheduled for October 13 from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at St. Martin of Tours Parish Hall, 7710 El Cajon Boulevard in La Mesa.  Visitors can savor samples of Fair Trade certified ice cream, (Ben and Jerry’s) and coffee while perusing gift items such as hand made baskets, jewelry, clothing accessories, and an abundance of gift items. Also available for purchase will be Fair Trade chocolate, coffee, tea, bananas and soda.

Here is an opportunity to join the many thousands of today’s consumers who are inspired to add “socially responsible” to their shopping list. To purchase a Fair Trade certified product is to make a difference. The designation signifies that artisans and farmers in the poorest areas of the world have received fair, livable wages for their product or ingredients. In addition, certain standards must be met in the production process. These include protecting the environment, building economic sustainability, and providing opportunities for education and health care for families. Young children are protected from forced labor.

"HISTORY ALIVE" OCT. 3 TO FEATURE LEMON GROVE'S FIRST CITY MANAGER

 

September 30, 2013 (Lemon Grove) – The "History Alive" lecture series, sponsored by the Lemon Grove Historical Society, will continue on Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. in the H. Lee House Cultural Center, 3205 Olive, Lemon Grove.  Jack Shelver, the city's first city manager, will look back at the heady days of early cityhood in 1977. 

Jack, who retired to Julian in 1994, where he serves as president of the Fire Board, spent 17 years as Lemon Grove's chief executive.  He oversaw the coming of the trolley and the recreation of the original train depot.  He also oversaw the building of the Senior Center, launched redevelopment, and established the first General Plan.

September 27, 2013 (La Mesa) – The City of La Mesa will host its fourth annual Senior Expo on Thursday, October 10, 2013.  With a wide variety of speakers and exhibitors, Expo will offer free “one-stop shopping” for all adults facing life changes that may affect their independence, or those who would like great tips on safety and security. The Expo will be held at the La Mesa Community Center, 4975 Memorial Drive, La Mesa 91942 from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm, and is supported by funding from the San Diego Association of Governments.

 September 26, 2013 (Julian) -- As part of Julian’s Apple Days Celebration, a two-day Apple Days Festival will be held October 5th  and 6th at Menghini Winery featuring apple displays, music and dancing, an antique tractor display, children’s games and activities, gold panning demonstrations, a beer and wine garden, food and merchandise vendors, contests, and, of course, apple pie. The event runs from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., both Saturday and Sunday.

WINE TASTING SEPT. 29 TO HELP RE-OPEN SIERRA CLUB'S FOSTER LODGE, REBUILD CABIN LOST IN CHARIOT FIRE

 

September 22, 2013 (San Diego’s East County) – The Sierra Club invites the public to a benefit to raise funds for rebuilding a cabin lost in the Chariot Fire on July , and to celebrate the fact that the historic Foster Lodge survived the wildfire on Mount Laguna.  While there was insurance coverage, the Chapter needs to raise funds to offset a $10,000 deductible and other costs not covered to get the lodge reopened for business.

September 21, 2013 (Lemon Grove) The City of Lemon Grove and Lemon Grove Historical Society invites the public to a Grand Opening Party on the Main Street Promenade on Friday evening, Sept. 27  from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. This hometown event celebrates the completion of the Pioneer Modernism Park at the Main Street Promenade and the welcomes Lemon Grove’s newest neighbors from Citronica One, the brand new colorful and modernistic residential and business structure recently completed near Highway 94 and the Lemon Grove Trolley Station.

“Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow” is the name chosen for the Pioneer Modernism Park, as it evokes Lemon Grove’s history. Visitors can view the new wonderful installations at the park, such as the wind spire, tractor slide, mosaics, charming seats, and windmill. Visitors are encouraged to bring the children, friends and colleagues to enjoy dancers, singers, jugglers, and magicians; to play in contests of hula hoop, jump rope, bubble blowing and whistling; and to enjoy free cookies and lemonade, and much more.

JULIAN CELEBRATES SUMMER’S END WITH MUSIC FESTIVAL SEPT. 21

September 19, 2013 (Julian) --For the 44th year, Julian celebrates the end of summer with music.  The Julian Music Festival  will be held September 21 from 1 to 8 p.m. at the Menghini Winery, 1150 Julian Orchards Road,  two miles west of town on Farmers Road (which starts as Main street in Julian). 

This year  the festivals offers a variety of music. Bluegrass celebrates the roots of this festival, Western ballads evoke tthe past and current songwriter/singers reflect the tunes heard today on MP3 players.

September 18, 2013 (San Diego’s East County) – The San Diego Astronomy Association (SDAA) Program Meeting will be held at the Mission Trails Regional Park today. The Program meeting begins at 7:00 PM.

Dennis Mammana will be lecturing on the The Seven Wonders of Our Universe. For more than three decades, Dennis Mammana has delivered the wonder and mystery of the cosmos to stargazers the world over. The lecture will run an hour, and is accompanied by the photography of noted astro photographers and astronomers.
