KNSJ RADIO STATION LAUNCH PARTY SATURDAY AT MISSION TRAILS REGIONAL PARK

 

 

July 29, 2013 (San Diego)-- KNSJ 89.1 FM radio invites you to join in celebrating launch of independent, nonprofit public radio for our region.  This special event will be held at the beautiful Mission Trails Regional Park Visitors Center on Saturday, August 3 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Come mix and mingle with special guests, enjoy live music, free museum tours and hikes, meet the radio station's producers and hosts, savor delicious food and drinks, honor community leaders receiving golden mike awards as we celebrate both inside the visitor and outside under the stars -- ending with stargazing led by local astronomers!

EL CAJON, LA MESA POLICE DEPARTMENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN NATIONAL NIGHT OUT AGAINST CRIME ON AUGUST 6

 

August 1, 2013 (San Diego's East County) – On Tuesday, August 6, the El Cajon Police Department will be holding a National Night Out community event in the parking lot of the El Cajon Police Station located at 100 Civic Center Way from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.  Enjoy a wide variety of booths and displays from numerous organizations offering health and safety information with a special emphasis on ways you can better protect your family, your home and your vehicle.  Emergency vehicles will be on display and there will be a K-9 demonstration. WINCHESTER WIDOWS’ ANNUAL PANCAKE BREAKFAST AUGUST 11

August 1, 2013 (Lakeside) – The Winchester Widows holds its annual Pancake Breakfast on August 11, from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at the Lakeside Elks, 11633 Woodside Avenue, Lakeside.  The event includes silent auction items and raffle prizes.

The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children 4-10.  All proceeds benefit Challenge Ranch for at-risk children.  For tickets call Lorrie Bernard at 619-792-9760.

DEEP PIT BBQ IN DULZURA AUGUST 4

August 1, 2013 (Dulzura) – Dulzura-Barrett Fire Dept. and the Dulzura Community Center host a Deep Pit BBQ on August 4 from noon to 4:00 p.m. at Camp’s Grove, 17087 Hwy 94, Dulzura.  A dinner of beef, pork, coleslaw, beans, corn-on-the-cob, roll and 8oz drink will be served from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m.  The entertainment will include music from DJ, Bill the Breeze, dancing, Chicken Game, horseshoes, raffles, an auction and activities for the kids.

COOL TIMES AFTER DARK: NIGHT FISHING AT LAKE JENNINGS

 

August 1, 2013 (Lakeside) – Summertime, and the living is easy. Fish are jumpin’, as the song goes.  Now you can try your hand at some summertime fishing after dark at Lake Jennings. The park is open for night fishing every Friday and Saturday night now through Labor Day at the end of August.

The largest fish caught at the lake is a whopping 68-pound catfish back in October2004.  The record Largemouth Bass weighed in at 17 pounds, 2 ounches, caught at Siesta Point in 2005.

With temperatures soaring to triple digits this summer, night fishing offers a cool option for anglers of all ages.  The lake also has picnicking, hiking, boating and camping.

July 12, 2013 (Descanso) --Descanso Junction is firing up the BBQ to help us celebrate East County's western heritage at our Wild West Fest and BBQ on Saturday, August 10 from 4-7 p.m. at the historic Descanso Town Hall (24536 Viejas Grade Road, Descanso).  Prince includes BBQ feast, wild west show, dancing, live music, and prizes galore!

Your ticket ($15 at early-bird rates, $20 at the door) includes a delicious tri-tip and chicken barbecue feast,  Wild West show, live music, dancing, and a chance to win thousands of dollars in prizes.The Hole in the Wall Gang and  Gaskill Brothers Gunfighters will provide live western reenactments with a full half-hour wild west show. Author Bryon Harrington will be there with his book, Campo, the Forgotten Gunfight. Plus we'll have a Doc Holliday reenactor. WATERMELON DAYS AT THE OASIS CAMEL DAIRY JULY 27-28

 

July 25, 2013 (Ramona) –The Oasis Camel Dairy in Ramona invites the public to one of East County’s most unique events, Watermelon Days on July 27 and 28 from 3-6 p.m.

The fun begins with an exotic bird show at 3 p.m., followed by a camel show at 4 p.m.  After that, you can feed watermelons to the camels, enjoy camel rides, and shop at the Camel Dairy store for gift items such as camel milk soaps and lotions.

LITTLE SAIGON LANTERN FESTIVAL BEGINS JULY 19

July 19, 2013 (San Diego) – The Little Saigon 5th Annual Lantern Festival begins tonight at 5 p.m. and preparations are underway at Hoover High School, 4474 El Cajon Blvd., San Diego, as volunteers are assembling and hanging thousands of lanterns, erecting vendor booths and building the stage and Vietnamese Cultural Village.  This year’s festival celebrates the formal designation of the new Little Saigon Cultural and Commercial District.

A MEXICAN FIESTA PARTY TO CELEBRATE THE VINTAGE 1924 CADILLAC JULIAN STAGE BUS JULY 20

July 13, 2013 (Campo) – The Motor Transport Museum is hosting a Mexican Fiesta party to celebrate the completion of the restoration work on the vintage 1924 Cadillac Julian Stage bus on July 20 at 4 p.m. at the museum, 31949 Highway 94, Campo. 

Attendees can ride in the 1924 Cadillac Stage bus, learn what was state-of-art manufacturing of busses in the 1920’s, wear vintage clothing and enjoy vintage music.  There will also be surprise events for the kids.

CITY OF LA MESA FREE SUMMER MOVIE JULY 26

July 13, 2013 (La Mesa)—The  City of La Mesa presents “Movie Night Under the Stars” on July 26, at La Mesita Park. The movie, “Wreck it Ralph” (rated PG), starts at 8:00 p.m. with pre-show entertainment starting at 7:30 p.m. This is fun family entertainment at its best “Under the Stars.”

The movie is FREE to the public and will be shown on a 25’ x 14’ screen. Bring your lawn chair, spread out a blanket, sit back and enjoy.  La Mesita Park is located adjacent to the Junior Seau Sports Complex at 8855 Dallas Street, La Mesa.

BACK TO THE OLD WEST: DESCANSO DAYS JULY 13 PACKS PLENTY OF FAMILY FUN

 

 

July 5, 2013 (Descanso)--You’re invited to come “Back to the Old West” at Descanso Days on July 13, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and join in some good old-fashioned backcountry fun at the historic Descanso Town Hall including live music, deep-pit barbecue, a parade, booths, prizes and more.

Guests can also cheer on entries in the Descanso Days Parade – Aussie, the Australian shepherd, on his motorcycle; a variety of unique and antique tractors; Eric Runningpath and Daughter (professional Native American dancers); and several mounted groups including the Grand Ladies of the Old West, the Winchester Widows, the Hole in the Wall Gang, and the Escondido Mounted Patrol. For excitement in the sky, members of the El Cajon Classic Hangar Club will fly over the Parade route in their WWII airplanes.

DANCING UNDER THE STARS AT 43RD ANNUAL PINE VALLEY DAYS JULY 26 & 27

 

July 10, 2013 (Pine Valley) – Pine Valley Days returns to Pine Valley County Park, 28810 Old Highway 80 on July 26 and 27.  It begins on Friday with a Deep Pit BBQ from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. with dancing under the stars following.  Saturday kicks off at 9 a.m. with a 2 hour parade down old Highway 80 from Pine Valley Road to Pine Blvd.  Parade entries include equestrian, bands, clowns, old cars and fire trucks, among others.

PANCAKE BREAKFASTS ANNOUNCED

 

July 8, 2013 (Descanso) -- The public is invited to support a historic building and enjoy all the pancakes you can eat at the Descanso Town Hall’s monthly Pancake Breakfast.  The second Sunday of every month (except July and December), from 8:30-11:30am, the Descanso Town Hall Association hosts a  Pancake Breakfast cooked by local residents. The menu includes pancakes, eggs, sausages, fruit, orange juice, and coffee, tea, or hot chocolate.

If you missed the festivities, our East County Magazine event, “Celebrate Our Roots” at the Heritage of the Americas Museum on June 19 was a huge success! The event brought together people in a fun and educational way to celebrate East County’s cultural and agricultural heritage. Highlights of the event were recorded by Mike Hancock from KNSJ, East County’s NEW Community Radio Station with its transmitter in Descanso.  The East County Magazine LIVE! Radio Show will debut this week, airing Mondays through Fridays at 5 p.m. and 9 a.m.

June 28, 2013 (Ramona) – Join Jim, Milagro Farms winemaker, on June 29 at 4 p.m. for a guided hike around Milagro Farm Vineyards & Winery’s 20 acres of grapes.  This is a moderately strenuous hike and will finish at the tasting room with a private tasting.

SOMALI-AMERICAN CULTURAL FEST JUNE 29 IN CITY HEIGHTS

 

June 26, 2013 (San Diego) – Commemorating the 53rd anniversary of Somali independence, the 9th annual Somali American Cultural Fest will be held on Saturday, June 29 from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Market Creek Plaza at Jacob Center in City Heights, 3- 8 p.m. 

Thousands of Somali refugees and immigrants now call San Diego home.  The event will feature music, dance, poetry, a fashion show, children’s activities, food and vendor booths as well as free health screenings. The event is organized by Somali Youth United.

MOUNTAIN EMPIRE MEN'S CLUB HOSTS SCHOLARSHIP FUNDRAISER JUNE 28 AT DESCANSO TOWN HALL

June 26, 2013 (Descanso) -- Get ready to kick up your heels, because there will be live music and dancing in Descanso on Friday evening, June 28, 2013. Mountain Empire Men’s Club presents their 5th Annual Scholarship Fundraiser at the Descanso Town Hall. The newly designated “historical” town hall is located at 24536 Viejas Blvd. in Descanso. The event is from 5-10 p.m.

Descanso Junction Catering is hosting the event and cooking up a delicious smoked barbecue dinner. This special event also features a silent auction and raffle prizes. All funds collected will go directly to the Scholarship Fund for students in the Mountain Empire School District, of which Descanso is a  part.

DESCANSO DAYS’ PARADE & FAIR JULY 13

June 15, 2013 (Descanso) -- The Descanso Days’ Fair and Parade “Back to the Old West”, presented by the Descanso Town Hall Association, takes place July 13 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The parade, which begins at 10 a.m. at the Hotshots parking lot at 24321 Viejas Grade Road, Descanso, will follow Viejas Grade to the Descanso School.

The Fair will be held at the Town Hall, 24536 Viejas Grade Road and features live music from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m., including a steel kettle drum band, Just Friends Bluegrass, Breaking Bad and Barbwire Country Western.  Native American dancer, Eric Runningpath will perform and the Luke Barbour Scholarship Awards will be presented.

GMIA ANNUAL MEETING JUNE 23 AT WATER CONSERVATION GARDEN

 

June 17, 2013 (San Diego’s East County) – The Grossmont-Mt. Helix Improvement Association (GMIA) will hold its Annual Meeting on Sunday, June 23rd at the Cuyamaca Water Conservation Garden, 5:30pm – 8:30pm.

Phil’s BBQ and locally crafted beer and wine will be served, followed by Supervisor Dianne Jacob speaking on community interests.  Complimentary docent Garden Tours will also be available at 4:30pm.  Reservations are required.  The dinner is $10 per GMIA member and non-members may attend for $20 per person.

The authors will speak and autograph their books. June 12, 2013 (Julian) – Musicians will be wailing the blues on Saturday, June 15, when Robb Bower presents the 15th annual Julian Blues Bash “Family Affair.”  Six blues bands will perform all day. The event also features dancing, food, beer, wine tasting and free parking.

JUNE HAPPENINGS IN SAN DIEGO COUNTY PARKS

June 11, 2013 (San Diego) – County of San Diego Parks and Recreation has activities at parks throughout East County.  Activities include everything from guided hikes to Snakes ‘N Skins for the younger set.  Following is a list of events at East County parks:

Free Saturday programs meet at the Amphitheater at the scheduled time. Programs may change or cancel without notice depending upon the weather and Ranger availability. The Ranger needs to have at least 10 people for each program to begin.
