READERS & WRITERS CALENDAR OF EVENTS: JULY 21-AUG. 4

July 19, 2017 (San Diego) -- Like a zombie rising from the grave, Crown Books has come back to life. Like Borders and a number of other book sellers who were killed off by the likes of Amazon, they bit the dust in 2001 after being the third largest bookstore in the country. But the spirit was still alive and was bought lock stock and barrel including the loco and name by Rancho Penasquitos businessman Andy Wiess and reincarnated in Encinitas. They now sell used books at low prices.

But if you want to find a book more current and even meet the authors, look below and give an author some support by visiting one of the following book signings.

July 10, 2017 (La Mesa) -- She’s not originally from around here, but New York transplant and lifelong educator, Linda Gallo Hawley, can school most San Diegans on the region's native flora, fauna and even cultural history. In fact, she’s made her own mark on the culture of the region through her monthly “Nature Adventures!” programs at Mission Trails Regional Park, where she guides primary school children through the park’s many trails, pointing out unique and interesting plants and signs of wildlife along the way, all while singing catchy tunes like “The Ecosystem Song” and the “Big Brown Bats Song.” Now visitors to the La Mesa Classic Car Show have two chances to meet the captivating teacher in person.

READERS & WRITERS CALENDAR OF EVENTS: JULY 9-23

Copyright 2017 by Sam Warren

July 8, 2017 (San Diego) -- If you are like me, you like to scan and feel a book before putting out hard cash for a copy. With online bookstores like Amazon and their ilk causing many brick and mortar bookstores to go out of business, other than the local library, it is getting more difficult to do this. Being a minor author myself, I feel guilty in telling you this as it deprives authors of their well-earned royalties. However, I enjoy browsing through thrift and second hand shops. I know that it is impractical, but I believe that no book should be sold commercially unless the author gets some kind of remuneration.
