July 24, 2018 (La Mesa) -- This past Tuesday, the La Mesa Village had quite a buzz emanating from Fourpenny House Pub.   People came to try out a new concept – unplugged dining.  As there are no TV’s, this cozy Scottish Brew Pub already has less emphasis on screens than many restaurants.  Taking it a step further on Tuesday, Fourpenny offered table games and displayed signs encouraging people to take a tech break while enjoying their meal.

PINE VALLEY DAYS: PARADE AND FESTIVITIES JULY 27-28

July 19, 2018 (Pine Valley) -- Pine Valley Days will take place on July 27th and 28th.  Sponsored by the Mountain Empire Men’s Club in the mountain town of Pine Valley, Pine Valley Days will include a parade on Saturday at 9 a.m., live music by Barb Wire, craft fair, deep pit barbecue, kids zone, horseshoe tournament and other activities throughout the weekend.

WEST FIRE BENEFIT AND AUCTION AUG. 18

July 18, 2018 (Alpine) - A dinner and auction to benefit survivors of the West Fire in Alpine will be held on Saturday, August 18th from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the Alpine Community Center.

The Alpine Mountain Empire Chamber of Commerce and Alpine Community Center are organizing the fundraiser. All funds raised will be donated to the Alpine Community Foundation to help and support those affected by the West Fire, which destroyed 34 homes and also destroyed many outbuildings, damaging other properties.

FROM OUTLAWS TO A WOLF ON A MOTORCYCLE, ALPINE’S 4TH OF JULY PARADE IS SOMETHING TO HOWL ABOUT

July 1, 2018 (Alpine) -- Alpine’s Fourth of July Festival Parade rolls out at 10 a.m. Wednesday down Alpine Boulevard featuring a biplane flyover, donkeys, a clown on stilts, the Alpine outlaws, tumblers, floats, and a wolf on a motorcycle among over 50 entries.

After the parade, which ends at Tavern Road, a festival will be held at the Alpine Community Center, where Uncle Sam will be posing for photos. There will also be games, a dunk tank, bounce house and vendors galore.

DEERHORN VALLEY’S INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE

June 29, 2018 (Deerhorn Valley) – “If it moves, it can parade!” say organizers of the 6th annual Deerhorn Valley Independence Day Parade.  That includes wagons, carts, tractors,  bikes, strollers, joggers, horses, dogs, emus and other animals in a parade that reflects small town Americana at its best.

Staging for the parade in Deerhorn Valley, a small town south of Jamul, begins at 9:30 a.m. at McNeil’s Field at the junction of Elena Way and Mt. Elena (accessed off Deerhorn Valley Road: see map) with the parade rolling out at 10 a.m. A picnic follows, with hotdogs, chips, ice cream, water and free popcorn. There will also be face painting and vintage autos on display.

THE BIG LEMON TURNS 90: PARTY TIME IN LEMON GROVE ON JULY 3

The Big Lemon is all of the above. Lady Lemon will be 90 on the Fourth of July. We're holding a birthday party on July 3 from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Lemon (southwest corner of Broadway & Lemon Grove Avenue). Please come (park on Main Street) and sing "America the Beautiful," hear dignitaries, have a tasty Lemon Bite, get a Big Lemon factoid, see the ribbon-cutting on the next 90 years, and warble "Happy Birthday, Dear Lemon."

The event will take place on World Refugee Day, observed annually to honor the courage, strength and determination of people who are forced to flee their homeland under threat of persecution, conflict and violence.

June 18, 2018 (El Cajon) - If you were among the San Diego County residents to receive a hepatitis A vaccine before December 1, 2017, it’s time for your second dose of vaccine.

The County’s Health and Human Services Agency is hosting a free hepatitis A vaccination event on Thursday, June 21, at the East Region Public Health Center, 367 N. Magnolia Ave. from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m.
