FROM THE FIRE CHIEF'S CORNER: MAKE IT MEMORABLE!

May 19, 2014 (San Diego’s East County)--While next Monday we will be remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces, Memorial Day can be thought of as one of the most important holidays in the U.S.  Observed annually every last Monday of May, people usually take some time off from their work and other activities to reflect on the significance of this all-important celebration and enjoy many outdoor activities and events.  Make this Memorial day memorable by following some of these safety tips.

Avoid food poisoning by cooking fresh poultry and beef properly and to instruction.  Thoroughly clean the grill of any grease or dust.  Do not use a grill indoors, near hazardous vegetation or near any surface that can catch fire.

To prevent drowning, avoid alcohol when swimming or boating.  Wear a lifejacket whenever you are on a boat.  Make sure young children are supervised at all times when near the beach, on a boat, or by a pool or hot tub.  Don’t swim alone.

Wear sunscreen with at least an SPF of 15 or higher and apply it generously throughout the day.  Wear a hat outdoors.  Drink plenty of water, especially when in the sun or if you are sweating heavily.

Do not drink and drive.  Wear your seatbelt at all times.  Make sure your vehicle has been properly serviced and is in good condition before a long road trip. Be patient!
