December 20, 2010 (San Diego)—The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for all of San Diego County through Wednesday afternoon. Rainfall rates of more than an inch per hour are possible, particularly in the mountains.

“A flash flood watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation,” the National Weather Service warns.

Streams, washes, and low-lying areas near major rivers are subject to flooding; mud and debris flows are also possible, especially below steep terrain and in areas with little vegetation including fire-burned areas.

On Wednesday, strong thunderstorms with intense rainfall could accompany a cold front, increasing the threat of mud and debris flow.

The public is advised to monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action if a flash flood watch is elevated to a flash flood warning.

Several roads have been closed in low places due to flood hazards.  These include Quarry Road in Spring Valley, Huffstatler in Rainbows, and Country Club in Harmony Grove.

In addition, a swift water rescue is underway this eveing in De Luz, where a vehicle plunged into a flooded waterway.
