September 24, 2016 (San Diego) - The Padres got back into the series with a big win last night.  They looked to take a series lead tonight, albeit with a lopsided pitching matchup in Jarred Cosart vs. Madison Bumgarner.

The Giants weren't letting that happen.  In the first inning, Joe Panik singled, scoring two and the Giants jumped out to a 2-0 lead.  Angel Pagan singled to score Eduardo Nunez and the Giants led 3-0 early.

In the fourth, Buster Posey grounded into a fielder’s choice, scoring MadBum and the Giants led 4-0.  Denard Span scored and quickly, the Padres were getting shut out 5-0.  Nunez singled to score Brandon Belt and the score was 6-0.

Hunter Renfroe salvaged the Padres a little bit in their half of the fourth with a solo homer--his first career MLB home run--to make the score 6-1.

In the fifth, Derek Norris did his usual thing where he does nothing and then shows up out of nowhere and hits a two-run homer to cut the lead in half 6-3.

They got even closer when Adam Rosales launched a two-run homer in the sixth and suddenly, it was a one run game, 6-5.

And before we knew it, the game was tied.  The recently called up Manuel Margot singled in the seventh to score Travis Jankowski to tie the game at six.  Thanks to him, we went to extra innings.

It didn’t last long, though.  After a double by Kelby Tomlinson and a double by Hunter Renfroe, Pagan scored and the Giants led 7-6.  Span sealed the deal with a two run homer and the Giants led 9-6.  They’d triumph in the end in a short extra-innings battle and retook the series lead again.

Game four is tomorrow at 1:40 p.m.  Clayton Richard will face an unnamed starter.

Injuries:

  • Jarred Cosart left tonight's game with right elbow inflammation
